When you pick toward the back end of Round 1, you have a great chance to grab two top-10 receivers, which happened here with A.J. Green and Allen Robinson. Both finished in the top 10 last year, and I love the outlook for Green in 2016 with Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu gone as free agents, along with Tyler Eifert (ankle) hurt. Green could play like Julio Jones this season and soak up targets at an alarming rate.
Robinson will have some regression from last season, especially since he scored 14 touchdowns, but he's still a solid pick in Round 2 at No. 16 overall. I love starting any team like this, especially in PPR.
Let's see how the rest of my team turned out at No. 9 overall ...
- 1.9 A.J. Green, WR, Bengals
- 2.16 Allen Robinson, WR, Jaguars
- 3.33 C.J. Anderson, RB, Broncos
- 4.40 Cam Newton, QB, Panthers
- 5.57 Matt Jones, RB, Redskins
- 6.64 Eric Decker, WR, Jets
- 7.81 Giovani Bernard, RB, Bengals
- 8.88 Delanie Walker, TE, Titans
- 9.105 Isaiah Crowell, RB, Browns
- 10.112 Sterling Shepard, WR, Giants
- 11.129 LeGarrette Blount, RB, Patriots
- 12.136 James Starks, RB, Packers
- 13.153 Steelers DST
- 14.160 Graham Gano, K, Panthers
After drafting two receivers with your first two picks, you then want to lock up quality running backs, and we'll find out if I did that with Anderson, Jones and Bernard as my top three guys. Bernard was a great value pick in Round 7, but I'm taking a risk with Anderson and Jones as starters heading into Week 1.
I drafted a questionable flex option in Decker (he has quarterback issues and could struggle if his touchdowns regress as expected), and I might have been better off with a receiver like Michael Floyd in Round 4 instead of Newton. But Newton, if he plays like he did last season as the No. 1 Fantasy quarterback, could cover up some flaws on my roster, and I expect this team to be competitive if Green and Robinson are once again stars.
Making the playoffs will likely come down to how well Anderson, Jones and Bernard play, as well as any contributions from Crowell, Blount and Starks. I stole Shepard in this draft, and he could easily be the best rookie receiver this season since he's slated to start for the Giants opposite Odell Beckham.
Walker also is an underrated tight end in PPR leagues, and he had 94 catches last season in his first year with Marcus Mariota. Hopefully he'll continue to build on that performance this season.
