Head coach Andy Reid confirmed that Gabbert will start Sunday's game against the Chargers, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports. With the Chiefs secure as the No. 3 playoff seed in the AFC playoffs, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be rested this weekend, with an eye toward keeping him healthy for the wild-card round. Gabbert will thus step in for his first extended action with the Chiefs, as his lone appearance this season came in the second half of a blowout win over the Bears in Week 3. The 34-year-old Gabbert has made 48 career NFL starts, though Sunday's will be his first since the 2018 season.

Head coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday that Gabbert will be the next man up at quarterback if Tom Brady comes out of Sunday's matchup against Atlanta early, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports. Tampa Bay is locked into the fourth seed for the NFC playoffs, so while Brady will start, it's expected that the 45-year-old won't play the entire game. If that's the case, Gabbert will be the next man up, while Bowles also mentioned that Kyle Trask is likely to be active and may see action when Brady and Gabbert are taken out.

Gabbert completed five of seven attempts for 46 yards in the Buccaneers' 27-10 preseason loss to the Colts on Saturday night. Gabbert was the second quarterback in with Tom Brady making his preseason debut, and the veteran backup was able to helm a nine-play, 81-yard scoring march that culminated in a Ke'Shawn Vaughn one-yard touchdown run. Gabbert saw action in all three exhibitions and was efficient in each one, and he'll open the season in the familiar and typically low-volume role of backing up the highly durable Brady.

Gabbert will start Saturday's preseason contest against the Titans, Joey Knight of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Gabbert entered last weekend's exhibition matchup against the Bengals after Tom Brady handled a single series, but the journeyman veteran will officially get the start Saturday. After Gabbert, who looks set to reprise his role as Brady's primary backup during the regular season, Ryan Griffin and rookie Kyle Trask also stand to see some action.

Gabbert re-signed Wednesday with the Buccaneers on a one-year, $2.5 million contract, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. The Buccaneers continue their efforts to maintain roster continuity by bringing back Gabbert for another season as the No. 2 option behind Tom Brady. The 31-year-old's only action last season came in a Week 16 thrashing of the Lions, when Brady went to the bench for the second half. Unless things take an unexpected turn for the defending Super Bowl champions during the 2021 campaign, Gabbert will once again be in store for limited action.
