The 49ers are expected to suspend Campbell for the final three games of the regular season after the linebacker refused to enter Thursday's 12-6 loss to the Rams, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Campbell had played at least 62 percent of the 49ers' defensive snaps through the team's first 13 games while totaling 79 tackles, but he lost his starting job in Week 15 after Dre Greenlaw was cleared to make his season debut. With Greenlaw's night coming to an early end after he experienced soreness in his surgically repaired Achilles tendon and fellow linebacker Dee Winters (neck) also exiting early, the 49ers called upon Campbell to step in, but the 31-year-old declined to do so. While speaking to the media Friday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Campbell would no longer be part of the team due to his actions, but rather than waiving the veteran linebacker and allowing him to find an opportunity elsewhere before the end of the season, the team is instead planning on suspending him. Expect the transaction to be made official within the next couple of days, bringing an end to Campbell's tenure in San Francisco before he becomes a free agent this spring.

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that Campbell -- who refused to enter Thursday's 12-6 loss to the Rams -- isn't expected to play another snap with the 49ers, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Campbell's decision not to play when called upon Thursday drew the ire of both the coaching staff and multiple teammates, so his presence in the locker room moving forward would likely be a distraction. The 49ers are still deciding how to best handle the situation, with Wagoner noting that while the most obvious direction would be to cut Campbell, the team could instead opt to suspend him without pay. Wagoner also explains that Campbell first refused to play Thursday after being asked to step in for Dee Winters, who was dealing with a neck injury. Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles instead entered for Winters, and if the latter isn't able to suit up Week 16 against Miami on Dec. 22, Flannigan-Fowles would likely be in line for extended work on defense.

Campbell recorded five tackles (three solo) during Sunday's 35-10 loss at Buffalo. Despite playing a healthy 40 defensive snaps Sunday, Campbell failed to tally seven tackles for the first time since Week 7 versus the Chiefs. He's still narrowly on pace for his third 100-tackle season as a pro heading into a Week 14 tilt versus the Bears.

Campbell compiled seven tackles (four solo) in the 49ers' win Sunday versus Tampa Bay. Campbell finished second on the team in tackles behind Fred Warner' nine. Campbell has now racked up seven or more tackles in back-to-back games and four times total this season. He will look to produce again during San Francisco's Week 11 matchup versus Seattle.

Campbell wrapped up nine tackles (two solo) with one pass defended in Sunday's 24-23 loss to the Cardinals. Campbell's nine tackles marked a new season high for the newly signed linebacker. The 30-year-old has posted modest numbers despite playing nearly every snap on defense for San Francisco this season. The 129-plus tackle seasons from Campbell's days in Atlanta and Green Bay seem like a distant memory, but there may still be some IDP value to be had for the starting linebacker.
