  • David Mayo: Announces retirement
    By RotoWire

Mayo announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. The 2015 fifth-round pick out of Texas State played nine NFL seasons, starting his career with the Panthers before stints with the Giants and Commanders. Mayo's most productive season came in 2019 with the Giants, when he logged 82 tackles (52 solo), two sacks and one fumble recovery across 16 games. He last played for Washington in 2023, and after not being able to catch on with a team in 2024, Mayo has elected to hang up his cleats.

  • Mayo registered nine tackles (six solo) in Sunday's 38-31 loss to the Eagles. Mayo got the start Sunday with Cody Barton (ankle) placed on injured reserve Saturday. Mayo followed up his 11-tackle performance in Week 7 with Sunday's team-high total over 54 defensive snaps. Mayo should continue to see the field plenty with Barton set to miss at least the next three games.

  • Mayo will start at linebacker in Sunday's game versus Philadelphia, Zach Selby of the Commanders' official site reports. With Cody Barton (ankle) out, Mayo will get the call as the next man up at linebacker in Week 8. He recorded 11 tackles after he took over for Barton in Week 7, so he holds some IDP appeal against the run-heavy Eagles.

  • Mayo registered 34 tackles (14 solo), including one sack, while playing in 13 games (three starts) during the 2022 season. Mayo saw the majority of his playing time this season on special teams, but he still started Washington's final three games as Cole Holcomb (foot) and Jon Bostic (pectoral) were both out with injuries. The eighth-year pro was effective in his limited playing time, as he amassed 25 tackles and a sack during that three-game span. With his contract set to expire this offseason, Mayo will provide value on special teams and as a reserve linebacker to whichever team he ends up in 2023.

  • Commanders' David Mayo: Gets upgraded
    By RotoWire

Mayo (hamstring) was listed as a full participant on Thursday's practice report. Mayo hasn't played since Week 8 against the Colts due to the injury, but it appears he'll finally return Sunday against Atlanta. The expected availability of the veteran starting linebacker should be good news for the Commanders' defense when it faces the Falcons for Week 12.
