  The 49ers released Vaughn on Monday. Vaughn served as camp and preseason depth while the Niners dealt with injuries in their backfield. Vaughn played 46 offensive snaps during the preseason and rushed 19 times for 46 yards, averaging a substandard 2.4 yards per carry. He also caught two passes for just four yards. The 28-year-old veteran doesn't have much left in the tank.

  The 49ers signed Vaughn to a contract Saturday. Vaughn will solidify the 49ers' backfield depth due to Isaac Guerendo (shoulder) and Jordan James (finger) both being sidelined for a few weeks. Vaughn spent most of the 2024 season on the 49ers' practice squad and played in three regular-season games, logging two carries for four yards.

  Vaughn reverted to the 49ers' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log. Vaughn was elevated to the active roster for Week 16 and ended up being the 49ers' No. 2 running back behind Patrick Taylor due to the absences of Isaac Guerendo (hamstring) and Israel Abanikanda (coach's decision). However, Vaughn was limited to eight special-teams snaps and did not show up on the box score otherwise. His chances of being elevated for Week 17 against the Lions would significantly decrease if Guerendo is cleared to play.

  The 49ers elevated Vaughn from the practice squad Saturday ahead of Sunday's game at Miami, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. Vaughn was elevated from the practice squad for the third week in a row. The fifth-year running back totaled two carries over this span, and, while he didn't see any action on offense last week, he'll likely have to serve as RB3 or RB2 versus the Dolphins. Last week's starter Isaac Guerendo has been ruled out with a hamstring injury, leaving Patrick Taylor and Israel Abanikanda as the top candidates to step up as RB1.

• 49ers' Ke'Shawn Vaughn: Back on active roster

  The 49ers elevated Vaughn from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of Thursday's game versus the Rams. Vaughn got in the mix this past Sunday against the Bears when Isaac Guerendo exited early due to a foot sprain. All three of Vaughn's offensive snaps occurred in garbage time with San Francisco holding a massive lead, resulting in two carries for four yards. Guerendo's status for Week 15 remained in limbo until earlier Thursday, when Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the running back "feels good" and intends to play versus L.A. If Guerendo is able to suit up, he likely would pace the team's backfield, with Patrick Taylor and then Vaughn the pecking order behind him.
