• Chargers' Justin Herbert: Disappointing in Week 1 loss

  Herbert completed 17 of 27 passes for 209 yards with one touchdown and one interception while adding five rushes for 29 yards in the Chargers' 26-14 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday. Herbert's final line was about as unremarkable as his performance in the shocking season-opening loss, one where the 2020 first-round pick was sacked three times in addition to his one interception. He had a particularly difficult second half outside of his eight-yard touchdown pass to Ladd McConkey (chest), as Los Angeles' six other possessions after halftime ended in either a punt, a blocked punt or the aforementioned interception, which came at the Cardinals' 5-yard line. The loss of McConkey to his injury in the third quarter certainly didn't help Herbert's cause, and he and his healthy teammates will look to atone for an alarming upset defeat when they face off with the division rival Raiders in next Sunday's home matchup.

  Herbert completed two of three passes for 74 yards and a touchdown, rushed once for no gain and lost a fumble in the Chargers' 20-18 preseason loss to the Rams on Thursday. Herbert drew the start and completed a nine-yard pass to Charlie Kolar on the Chargers' first play from scrimmage before losing a fumble on his next snap. However, the star signal-caller atoned on his second and final possession, hitting Quentin Johnston for a 65-yard touchdown pass to close out his brief night. Herbert, who put up five pass attempts across two games this preseason, will begin his quest to eclipse the 3,700-yard mark through the air for the third straight campaign with a Week 1 home matchup against the Cardinals on Sunday, Sept. 13.

  Herbert is expected to play in Thursday's preseason finale against the Rams, Alex Insdorf of BoltBeat.com reports. The Chargers plan to get their key personnel one more dose of game action before the season gets underway. Other than Derwin James and Khalil Mack, the starters will be on the field for about 6-8 plays. After that final tuneup, Herbert and the Chargers will get ready for Week 1 against the Cardinals.

  Herbert completed one of two passes for nine yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the Chargers' 41-17 preseason loss to the 49ers on Thursday night. As expected, Herbert and the rest of the Chargers' offensive starters opened Thursday's game. However, Los Angeles traveled only eight yards on three plays before punting, and Herbert's one completion came to offseason addition Charlie Kolar. The talented signal-caller once again enters the new season with elevated expectations following back-to-back 11-6 campaigns, and with a bevy of young pass-catching talent surrounding him, as well as veteran newcomer David Njoku.
