Montgomery caught an 80-yard touchdown on a wheel route in Tuesday's practice, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports. It was the biggest play of training camp to date, according to Bien-Aime, and it's further proof that the Texans are serious about getting Montgomery involved in the passing game after he was used more as the thunder to Jahmyr Gibbs' lightning in Detroit. Montgomery has shown in the past that he's more than capable of making plays as a receiver, catching 54 passes in 2020 with the Bears and secured 36 of 38 targets for 341 yards in 2024 with the Lions. While Woody Marks will have some role on passing downs, Montgomery is expected to open the season as the clear RB1 in Houston.

Texans running backs coach Danny Barrett said in early July that Montgomery is "a three-down back" who "can do it all," Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports. Montgomery is positioned to serve as Houston's lead running back after arriving from Detroit via trade this offseason, and Houston appears prepared to use him in a workhorse role. Barrett praised Montgomery's physical running style, blocking ability and leadership, while emphasizing the veteran's mentality and consistency. With an upgraded offensive line and little proven competition beyond Woody Marks, Montgomery looks poised for a substantial workload, and his skill set could allow the Texans to find greater success in the red zone and in play action, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2.

Houston's offseason acquisition of Montgomery should help the team have a more punishing running game and improve in the red zone as well as in play action, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 reports. The Texans struggled on the ground last season, ranking fourth-worst in the league with an average of 3.9 YPC and tying for second-worst with just nine rushing TDs. The team brought in Montgomery via a trade with Detroit in early March to add power to the position while cutting Joe Mixon (foot) and presumably parting ways with Nick Chubb, who remains a free agent. Montgomery is thus set to lead the team's RB corps alongside Woody Marks, who took hold of the top job as a rookie last season but is slated to work in more of a pass-catching role in 2026. Offensive coordinator Nick Caley has stated that he's also interested in having Montgomery and Marks on the field together in split-back sets at times, per Wilson.

Montgomery and Texans agreed to terms on a two-year, $16.5 million contract Saturday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Per Wilson, Montgomery's new deal comes with a $6.5 million signing bonus, $1.5 million guaranteed in 2026 and $2.5 million guaranteed in 2027. The new contract comes nearly two weeks after the Texans acquired Montgomery from the Lions in exchange for Juice Scruggs, a fourth-round pick and a seventh-round pick. With Joe Mixon (foot) being released by the Texans on March 6 and Nick Chubb entering free agency, Montgomery and Woody Marks are slated to serve as Houston's top backfield options for the 2026 season.

The Texans agreed to terms Monday on a trade with the Lions to acquire Montgomery, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Montgomery, who will turn 29 years old in June, has two years remaining on his current deal and may be the leader of a Houston backfield that could see Joe Mixon (foot/ankle) be cut this offseason and is slated to lose Nick Chubb to free agency, leaving 2025 fourth-round pick Woody Marks as its most notable incumbent. While Montgomery saw his production decline in 2025, finishing with 716 rushing yards and eight touchdowns across 17 regular-season appearances, he rushed for 775 yards and 12 touchdowns in just 14 regular-season appearances the year prior and has proven an ability to handle a workhorse role, if necessary. The Texans could certainly make further additions to the backfield in free agency and/or April's draft, but this trade represents a significant boost to Montgomery's fantasy stock for the 2026 campaign. Per Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Texans will trade Juice Scruggs, a fourth-round pick and a seventh-round pick to Detroit in exchange for Montgomery.
