The Jets are waiving Carlson, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. In related news, the team is signing Harrison Mevis as Carlson's replacement to compete with Caden Davis for the placekicker job. Carlson could get end up with another team this summer, but it isn't a great sign for his future that the Jets released him before training camp.

Carlson and undrafted rookie Caden Davis are slated to compete for the Jets' starting kicker job in training camp in the wake of the Jets having released veteran Greg Zuerlein (knee) Friday, Andy Vasquez of NJ.com reports. Carlson kicked for New York in five regular-season games in 2024, while also logging two appearances with the 49ers. In those seven contest combined, he converted 13 of 15 field-goal attempts and 12 of 15 extra-point tries. Zuerlein's release has been expected all offseason, but with the transaction now official, Carlson's path to a starting role Week 1 is unambiguous. The Jets could still bring in further competition, but for the time being, Davis, an undrafted rookie out of Ole Miss, is his only rival for the No. 1 gig.

The Jets waived Carlson on Monday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports. Before being waived Monday, the 2023 sixth-round pick from Auburn served as the Jets' top kicker in five games this season while Greg Zuerlein. Carlson was fairly accurate kicking for New York, converting eight of his 10 field-goal attempts, with each of his misses coming from 50-plus yards. However, Carlson missed two extra-point tries on just 11 attempts, far below the NFL's average success rate of 95.9 percent. The 26-year-old could remain in New York on the team's practice squad if he clears waivers.

Carlson made one of two field-goal attempts and all three PAT tries in Sunday's 32-25 win over the Jaguars. Carlson's miss from 48 yards in the fourth quarter marked his first missed field-goal attempt in six appearances between the 49ers and Jets this season, though he has had a pair of PATs go astray. He connected on a 43-yard try in the third quarter. The Jets haven't provided an update on Greg Zuerlein (knee) since the veteran kicker went on injured reserve Oct. 30, so Carlson's likely to remain the kicker against the Rams in Week 16.

Carlson made all four of his field-goal attempts and both PAT tries in Sunday's 32-26 overtime loss to the Dolphins. Carlson's leg strength wasn't tested, as his longest kick was a 42-yard field goal that put the Jets up by three with 52 seconds left in the fourth quarter. He demonstrated strong accuracy, but it was all for naught, as Miami tied it up in the final seconds of regulation before scoring a walk-off touchdown in overtime. Carlson could be busy again in Week 15, giving him fantasy streaming appeal against the 3-10 Jaguars.
