• Chargers' Omarion Hampton: Quiet after first-half TD

  Hampton rushed 12 times for 43 yards and a touchdown and lost a fumble in the Chargers' 26-14 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday. Hampton and the Chargers looked ready to roll early in the alarming loss, as the second-year back answered Arizona's opening-drive touchdown with a hard-charging eight-yard scoring run with 4:22 remaining in the first quarter. He was very quiet from that point forward, however, and his lost fumble at Arizona's 34-yard line on the following possession cost Los Angeles both a potential scoring opportunity and led to a Cardinals field goal. Hampton also was surprisingly shut out of any pass-catching opportunities, but he should have a good chance at a larger workload in a Week 2 divisional home clash against the Raiders next Sunday.

  Hampton played four snaps on offense and didn't show up in the box score otherwise during the Chargers' 20-18 preseason loss to the Rams on Thursday. Hampton was on the field for the Chargers' first two offensive drives but did get a touch in Thursday's preseason finale. The 2025 first-rounder was limited to nine regular-season games in his rookie campaign due mostly to a fractured left ankle but still finished with 124 carries for 545 yards and four touchdowns while adding 32 catches (on 35 targets) for 192 yards and a score. Hampton is the lead back for the Chargers, but Kimani Vidal and Keaton Mitchell (undisclosed) both figure to see a fair amount of work in the scheme of new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.

  Hampton rushed once for minus-1 yard and wasn't targeted in the Chargers' 41-17 preseason loss to the 49ers on Thursday night. The second-year pro was the first Chargers running back to touch the ball, and he and the rest of Los Angeles' first-team offense exited the game after that opening possession. Hampton's brief appearance was unsurprising considering his importance to the team's offense, and it remains to be seen if he or any of the rest of the unit's front-line players will see any time during next Thursday night's home preseason finale against the Rams.

• Chargers' Omarion Hampton: OC to use hot hand approach at RB

  New Chargers OC Mike McDaniel said Monday he'll likely use a "hot hand" approach in the backfield this season, Kris Rhim of ESPN.com reports. "Bad news, fantasy owners," McDaniel said regarding the roles for Hampton, Kimani Vidal and Keaton Mitchell. "Good news is I see all three of those guys producing at a very high level. Bad news is I can't tell you which games those are." Hampton is being drafted in the second round of best-ball drafts currently, which appears to be a rich price for a player involved in what could be a convoluted backfield in 2026. Hampton wasn't handpicked by McDaniel, and the team signed Mitchell to a two-year, $9.25 million deal at McDaniel's request during the offseason. Vidal has the trust of coach Jim Harbaugh after what he did in Hampton's place last season. There are a lot of mouths to feed in this offense as a whole, making Hampton a high-risk, potentially-high-reward fantasy pick.

• Chargers' Omarion Hampton: Praised by McDaniel for recent growth

  Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel said Wednesday that Hampton has arguably shown "the most growth of any player" since the start of the offseason, Alex Insdorf of BoltBeat.com reports. McDaniel also mentioned that he's trying to get Hampton to stop his feet less often and instead rely on power to take on defenders. The 220-pounder definitely has that in his bag of tricks, but he does lean toward a finesse approach relative to other RBs his size. There's been a lot of speculation among fantasy players about the specifics of Hampton's 2026 role after the Chargers signed Keaton Mitchell this offseason. They also still have Kimani Vidal, who took 155 carries for 643 yards (4.1 YPC) and three TDs in 13 games last year. Hampton figures to be the starter and lead runner for an improved rushing attack, but it's not yet clear if he'll have a shot at 20 touches per game.
