  Sims returned three punts for 43 yards in Sunday's 26-23 loss to Detroit. Sims served as Houston's primary return specialist for the second consecutive week, although he didn't record a kickoff return. He played just two snaps on offense and has lined up on that side of the ball just 10 times in 2024. With Nico Collins (IR, hamstring) on the verge of returning, likely in Week 11, Sims' spot on the gameday roster may be in jeopardy.

  Sims (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Colts. Sims wasn't able to play in Week 7 due to a back injury. He returned to practice this week and was able to participate without restrictions, but he will remain on the sidelines as a healthy scratch for Sunday's contest. Smith's next chance to suit up will be Thursday night against the Jets.

  Sims (back) has been downgraded from questionable to out ahead of Sunday's game against the Packers. Sims was a late addition to the Texans' injury report Friday due to a back issue. While he was initially listed as questionable, the injury is severe enough that Sims will not travel with the team to Green Bay, and his next chance at suiting up will be Week 8 against the Colts on Oct. 27. With Robert Woods (foot) also not playing Sunday, Dameon Pierce and Tank Dell are the likely candidates to serve kickoff and punt-return duties, respectively.

• Texans' Steven Sims: Muffed punt leads to points

  Sims wasn't targeted over two offensive snaps, returned two punts for 10 yards and muffed a punt in Sunday's 24-20 win over Jacksonville. After the Jaguars' initial drive of the game stalled, Sims had the mishap on a punt return, putting the visitors in business at Houston's two-yard line. From there, Trevor Lawrence found rookie Brian Thomas in the end zone for an early 7-0 lead. Sims has operated as the Texans' primary returner of punts and also handles kickoffs as well. That he was back returning kicks following the miscue suggests his return role still is intact. Sims also played on offense for first time in four games, as Houston was without Tank Dell (chest).

• Texans' Steven Sims: Makes 53-man roster

  Sims made the Texans' initial 53-man roster Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Sims was one of seven wide receivers to claim a roster spot, and his ability to contribute as a return man in the main reason. The 27-year-old, who returned a punt 67 yards for a touchdown during last season's playoff loss to the Ravens, averaged 12.3 yards on four punt returns and 23.7 yards on three kick returns in 2023.
