  Allen (back) did not practice Wednesday, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports. Allen missed practice all of last week due to a back issue and didn't suit up for Sunday's loss to Arizona. His absence from practice to begin this week isn't a promising sign for his chance of returning to action against San Francisco in Week 3, though he'll have two more days to get back on the field prior to the release of Friday's final injury report. If Allen can't suit up Sunday, Hunter Long is likely to continue to back up Colby Parkinson at tight end.

  Allen (back) has been downgraded to out for Sunday's Week 2 contest against the Cardinals, Adam Grosbard of The Orange County Register reports. Allen was originally deemed doubtful on Friday's final injury report, but his status was subsequently downgraded to out. The tight end is dealing with a back injury that kept him out of practice entirely throughout the week. Allen's upcoming absence Sunday will likely move Hunter Long into the Rams' No. 2 tight-end role behind Colby Parkinson.

Allen was held out of practice all week due to a back issue, so it's no surprise that he likely won't be suiting up in Week 2.   Allen secured two of four targets for 11 yards during Saturday's 13-9 victory against the Chargers. The second-year tight end out of Clemson was used sparingly in the contest, as were all of the Rams' tight ends. Colby Parkinson notably did not take the field for the second straight game, meaning he'll likely be the starter during Tyler Higbee's (knee) absence. Allen and Hunter Long are in a competition to be No. 2 on the depth chart at the start of the season, but Long has failed to bring in a target through two preseason games. The duo's final chance to make their case will come against the Texans in a preseason Week 3 tilt.

• Rams' Davis Allen: Headed for No. 2 TE role

  Allen appears to be ahead of Hunter Long in a competition for the No. 2 TE spot early in the season, according to Cameron DaSilva of Rams Wire. Longtime starter Tyler Higbee is expected to miss the early part of the season, at the very least, after suffering ACL and MCL tears in a playoff loss at Detroit. Free-agent signing Colby Parkinson is on track to take over as the starter, but it isn't clear if he'll play as many snaps as Higbee normally would, potentially opening the door for Allen to have a decent-sized role. The Rams typically don't use multi-TE formations often, so it's also possible Allen gets most of his snaps on special teams even with Higbee out. Either way, the 2023 fifth-round pick has a tricky path to fantasy relevance despite showing some nice flashes late last season when both Higbee and Long were briefly unavailable.
