  • Gibbs carried the ball 29 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns and caught all five of his targets for 30 yards in Sunday's 31-30 overtime win over the Saints. He did lose a fumble, but there wasn't much to criticize about Gibbs' performance otherwise. The star running back opened the scoring with a one-yard plunge in the first quarter, then added another one-yard TD on the Lions' first possession of the second half. Gibbs set a career high with 320 touches in 2025 (243 carries and 77 catches), but he could be headed for even bigger volume this season with David Montgomery no longer in Detroit to siphon away reps. Gibbs will look to keep rolling in Week 2 on the road against the Bills.

  • Gibbs was held out of Thursday's preseason opener against the Bengals. The star running back was among a number of key skill players rested by the Lions on Thursday, a group that also included QB Jared Goff, WRs Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, as well as TE Sam LaPorta. Since he signed a lucrative three-year contract extension with the team last week, Gibbs -- who had previously reportedly been dealing with a minor back issue -- has been practicing, and is thus slated to reprise his role as the clear-cut top option in Detroit's backfield, and in turn maintain his standing as an elite fantasy option ahead of the 2026 regular season.

  • The Lions and Gibbs (back) agreed to terms on a three-year extension Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The $67.5 million deal can be worth up to $75.75 million and includes $51.5 million guaranteed, barely surpassing Bijan Robinson's extension (three years, $66.75 million and $51 million guaranteed) with the Falcons from earlier this week to make the former the highest-paid running back in the NFL. Gibbs has racked up 3,768 yards from scrimmage and 38 touchdowns in 34 regular-season games over the last two campaigns, so the investment made in him by Detroit is warranted. He'll continue to operate as the engine of the Lions offense for the foreseeable future.

  • Gibbs (back) and the Lions have made substantial progress on a three-year contract extension that would make him the highest-paid running back in the league, NFL reporter Jordan Schultz reports Thursday. According to Schultz, a deal could get done as soon as Thursday. Gibbs has been limited to conditioning work in practice amid ongoing contract negotiations with the Lions, but the star running back could begin practicing as soon as a deal is reached, assuming his minor back issue is behind him. In order to become the NFL's highest-paid running back, Gibbs would need to exceed the three-year, $66.75 million contract Bijan Robinson signed with the Falcons on Tuesday, which included $51 million guaranteed.

  • Lions coach Dan Campbell said Thursday that he's "not even sweating" Gibbs' absence from training camp amidst contract negotiations, though Campbell also noted that the running back is dealing with minor back discomfort, ESPN.com's Eric Woodyard reports. Multiple reports point to the contract situation as the impetus for Gibbs' absence through the first two days of training camp. The back injury is something to keep in mind, but it doesn't sound serious and might heal in a hurry with a new contract in hand. The Lions have Gibbs under team control for two more years after picking up his fifth-year option for 2027 ($14.3 million). A prolonged hold-in is possible if the two sides can't reach an agreement, but the current CBA essentially guarantees that no player on a rookie contract will hold out from actual games. Still, it'd be a minor ding to Gibbs' immense fantasy value if the situation were to drag on and affect his practice participation well into August.
