Luke McCown QB | DAL
Cowboys' Luke McCown: Nursing sore shoulder
McCown missed Monday's practice due to a sore shoulder that he sustained on a hit in Saturday's preseason opener, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
McCown is competing with Kellen Moore and Cooper Rush for the top backup spot behind starting quarterback Dak Prescott. The veteran didn't do much to help his chances Saturday, completing just six of 13 passes for 31 yards along with picking up the injury. There's nothing to indicate it's a serious concern for McCown, but if he's forced to play through pain in the remainder of the preseason, expecting improved performance in subsequent contests may be too much to ask.

Cardale Jones QB | LAC
Chargers' Cardale Jones: Uneven in team debut
Jones completed just two of nine passes for 50 yards and carried the ball twice for 18 yards in Sunday's preseason loss to the Seahawks.
Jones is expected to compete for the backup job along with incumbent Kellen Clemens and former practice squad member Mike Bercovici, but none of the trio was particularly impressive in a game that quickly got out of hand in the second quarter. The second-year signal caller worked with the third- and fourth-string units, showing off his mobility with a pair of scrambles for 18 yards, a figure that tied running back Andre Williams for the team lead in the contest.

Deshaun Watson QB | CLE
Texans' Deshaun Watson: Gets some first-team action
Watson has received a few snaps with the Texans' first-team offense during recent practices, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Watson's involvement with Houston's starters results from the team's substitution method during drills, which sometimes allows him to replace Tom Savage. While Savage is still tabbed as Houston's top quarterback, Watson certainly did his part to push for playing time with his performance in last week's preseason opener. Coach Bill O'Brien indicated the main priority for Watson at this stage of training camp is to continue getting plenty of reps in during practice to advance his understanding of the team's system and opposing defensive looks.

Dustin Vaughan QB | BAL
Dustin Vaughan: Dropped from Baltimore roster
The Ravens waived Vaughan on Monday, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
After a rough showing in the Ravens' preseason opener last week, Vaughan fell behind Josh Woodrum on the depth chart and will now be dropped from the roster entirely after the team signed veteran Thad Lewis to address its lack of experienced reserve options at quarterback. Given that teams still have plenty of time to reduce their training-camp rosters before the regular season arrives, Vaughan could still latch on with another organization, but even in a best-case scenario, he'll likely be viewed mainly as a candidate for the practice squad no matter where he lands.

Thad Lewis QB | BAL
Ravens' Thad Lewis: Lands deal with Baltimore
Lewis signed a contract with the Ravens on Monday, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
The well-traveled Lewis, who has had stints with seven other teams in seven NFL seasons, will find a new home in Baltimore after spending the 2016 campaign in San Francisco. He'll join the training-camp roster in place of fellow quarterback Dustin Vaughan, who was waived in a corresponding move. Lewis will provide the Ravens with some more experienced depth behind injured starter Joe Flacco (back) during camp, but Lewis seems unlikely to win a 53-man roster spot if both Flacco and top backup Ryan Mallett are both fully healthy by the time Week 1 arrives.

Stephen Morris QB | SEA
Colts' Stephen Morris: Falling down depth chart
Morris was 13-for-20 for 94 yards in Sunday's preseason loss to Detroit. While he led the Colts on their only touchdown drive, he was the third quarterback to play in the game.
Morris has fallen behind undrafted rookie Phillip Walker on the depth chart. While the Colts could carry three quarterbacks if Andrew Luck isn't ready to start the season due to a shoulder injury, it also seems likely Morris may not make the final roster.
-
P.J. Walker QB | SEA
Colts' Phillip Walker: Moving up depth chart
Walker went 9-for-20 for 86 yards passing in Sunday's preseason loss to Detroit. He was the second quarterback to play after Scott Tolzien as Walker has become No. 3 on the depth chart, the Indianapolis Star reports.
Walker, an undrafted free agent from Temple, has been taking an increasing share of reps in practice. He looked sharper than Tolzien, leading the Colts on their only scoring drive in the first half. It's hard to conceive he'd play in a NFL game this season, even if Luck remains out with a shoulder injury, but he could play his way onto the 53-man roster this preseason.
-
Nathan Peterman QB | ATL
Bills' Nathan Peterman: Making a push?
Peterman received second-team reps during Sunday's practice, Chris Brown of the Bills' official site reports.
T.J. Yates is still the No. 2 quarterback, but Peterman is coming off a nice performance in Thursday's preseason opener and perhaps coach Sean McDermott is going to open up the competition again after it previously looked like Peterman was locked into the No. 3 spot. By the sound of things, he also put in a strong day of practice Sunday, so we'll see how things shake out over the coming week and second preseason game.
-
Matthew Stafford QB | LAR
Lions' Matthew Stafford: Throws pick in preseason debut
Stafford completed two of three passes for 36 yards and an interception in Sunday's preseason win over the Colts.
Stafford's lone drive of the game started off nicely with completions to Ameer Abdullah and TJ Jones before ending in an unlucky pick. However, such small sample sizes mean little at this point in the season. What's more important to Stafford fans is the pair of impressive performances turned in by rookie targets Kenny Golladay and Michael Roberts. The depth and diversity of Detroit's receiving corps provided Stafford with a number of one-on-one opportunities last year, and with two more promising pass catchers in the fold, Stafford should be all the more dangerous in a contract year.
-
Jared Goff QB | DET
Rams' Jared Goff: Sharp in limited action
Goff completed three of four passes for 34 yards in Saturday's preseason opener against Dallas.
Goff was sharp in his brief 2017 debut, with the lone incompletion being a drop by Robert Woods. More important than Saturday's performance, the second-year quarterback now has a legitimate No. 1 receiver in Sammy Watkins, who didn't suit up for Saturday's game. Goff and Watkins figure to get extended playing time together in the second and third weeks of the preseason.
