With starting QB Tom Brady set to sit out the first four games of the regular season, Brissett is on track to serve as Jimmy Garoppolo's backup out of the gate, the Boston Globe reports.

Once Brady returns in Week 5, Brissett is in line to return to third-string duties, but the rookie's training camp reps have taken on added importance, given the his elevated status he'll gain come Week 1. It's still possible that the Patriots could add a veteran signal-caller before then, but the fact that they haven't done so hints at the team's confidence in Brissett, who the team took in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, 91st overall.

Rodgers was held out of Thursday's practice in order to rest, which is also an indication that he will be held out of Sunday's preseason opener, according to Jason Wilde of ESPN.com

Rodgers is not dealing with any sort of injury, but the Packers will play five preseason games compared to the four that 30 others team will play, and it appears the team will avoid taking any chances with Rodgers' health early on. A final call on Rodgers' status for Sunday's game will likely be made and announced Friday.

With Kellen Moore (ankle) out of action potentially until December, Prescott is currently listed as Tony Romo's backup on the QB depth chart.

There's almost zero chance the Cowboys will head into the season with a raw rookie backing up the fragile Romo, so expect them to explore the trade market for a signal-caller with more experience. Until that happens though, Prescott will get valuable extra reps in camp which can only help in his development. He's still a long shot to see meaningful snaps as a rookie, however.

Goff has worked with the second-team offense in the early days of training camp, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Head coach Jeff Fisher has so far entrusted first-string reps in the hands of Case Keenum, but as Goff builds up his knowledge of the offense, the first selection in the 2016 NFL Draft is sure to surpass the veteran in the quarterback pecking order. Whether it occurs in the preseason or regular season remains to be seen, but Goff represents the future of the Rams' second stint in Los Angeles.

Keenum resides at the top of the depth chart at quarterback in the early days of training camp, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The notion of allowing 2016 No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff to earn the top quarterback job in Los Angeles isn't ill-advised, but it's likely only a matter of time, whether during the preseason or regular season, before Keenum is supplanted from his current perch. For the time being, though, Keenum will serve as the top signal-caller in advance of the Rams' first season in southern California since 1994.

The Bucs waived LeFevour on Wednesday, Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The 29-year-old joined the Bucs on an undisclosed contract back in April, but with room needed for newly-signed OL Caylin Hauptmann, the team deemed him expendable. With Jameis Winston, Mike Glennon and Ryan Griffin ahead of him on the depth chart, LeFevour was seeing considerably limited reps in practice, and would have been a long shot to make the final roster had he hung on through the preseason.

Savage is displaying a quicker release during the initial days training camp, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Savage, who's entering his third year in the system, has been identifying his reads in more rapid fashion and making decisive, accurate throws. The Pitt graduate missed all of 2015 with a shoulder injury and is competing with Brandon Weeden to back up Brock Osweiler.

Carr is rooming with second-year wideout Amari Cooper at training camp, CSN Bay Area reports.

As the two most important players in Oakland's rebuilding process, Carr and Cooper are aware that improved chemistry could go a long way. The two spent time playing catch during the offseason, and then requested to be roommates at training camp in Napa. Coming off a breakout season, Carr could take another step in 2016, as the Raiders appear to have one of the league's top offensive lines, in addition to one of its rising stars at wide receiver. If things go as planned, Carr and Cooper will be teammates for a long time.

Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak said Lynch really stepped up at practice the past couple days, the team's official website reports.

Lynch has been working with the second and third units, while Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian have split the first-team reps. The rookie eventually figures to get some work with the starters, as the Broncos said he'll be part of the QB competition, and he's apparently already making a decent case. Even if he doesn't win the starting job, Lynch could tremendously help his cause if he shows well during camp and the preseason, potentially leaving Sanchez or Siemian with a very short leash for early-season failure.

Gabbert is splitting first-team reps with Colin Kaepernick at the start of training camp, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

The 49ers' overarching question heading into this season is the quarterback battle between Gabbert and Kaepernick. While Kaepernick spent the offseason recuperating from a trio of surgeries -- namely, one to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder -- Gabbert was handed the bulk of the snaps with the first stringers in OTAs and mandatory minicamp, giving him a seeming head start in the competition. Nonetheless, Kelly's decision to split snaps between the pair in training camp "down the middle" reveals a "may the best man win" situation, which is likely the prudent approach to figure out his main man under center.
