  • Zach Wilson QB | NO

Broncos' Zach Wilson: Shines in preseason finale

Wilson completed 16 of 25 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 38-12 preseason win over the Cardinals. He added 22 rushing yards and a TD on two carries.

Jarrett Stidham led the offense for Denver's first possession and got the team into the end zone, but Wilson played the rest of the way and had plenty of success, finding Nate Adkins for a one-yard score in the second quarter and Brandon Johnson for a 46-yard TD strike in the fourth. Wilson also added a one-yard touchdown plunge of his own just before halftime. Despite the strong performance, the former Jet will still likely head into the season as the Broncos' No. 3 quarterback, with 2024 12th overall pick Bo Nix having already been named the Week 1 starter.

  • Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Beats out White for backup QB job

Thompson has secured the backup quarterback job behind Tua Tagovailoa after the Dolphins released Mike White on Sunday, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.

Thompson operated as the Dolphins' emergency quarterback for all of 2023 while White was the backup behind Tagovailoa. It was an open competition for the No. 2 job between Thompson and White during the offseason and training camp, and the former won the battle by completing 35 of 61 passes for 379 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions across three preseason games. Thompson was selected by the Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and he appeared in seven regular-season games in his rookie year, completing 57.1 percent of his passes for 534 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

  • Broncos' Jarrett Stidham: Directs scoring drive Sunday

Stidham completed two of four passes for 28 yards in Sunday's 38-12 preseason win over the Cardinals.

The 28-year-old was under center for the Broncos' first possession and led them to pay dirt with a 10-play drive that was capped by a three-yard TD plunge by rookie running back Audric Estime. Stidham appears set as the top backup to 2024 12th overall pick Bo Nix at quarterback, although Zach Wilson's strong performance Sunday after taking over could cause the Denver coaching staff to at least consider a switch in the No. 2 spot.

  • Cardinals' Desmond Ridder: Concussed in preseason finale

Ridder is in concussion protocol following Sunday's 38-12 preseason loss to the Broncos, per head coach Jonathan Gannon, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.

Ridder went to the locker room in the second half to be evaluated for a head injury, and the testing revealed a concussion. Prior to exiting the game, Ridder completed 10 of 16 passes for 111 yards and rushed twice for 25 yards. If Ridder is unable to pass the NFL's five-step concussion protocol prior to the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the Bills, Clayton Tune would back up Kyler Murray.

  • Sam Hartman QB | WAS

Commanders' Sam Hartman: Not suiting up Sunday

Hartman (shoulder) will not play in the Commanders' preseason finale against the Patriots on Sunday.

Hartman sustained a shoulder injury in the leadup to Washington's second preseason game against Miami on Aug. 17. With Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota (groin) also not playing Sunday, the Commanders will go with Jeff Driskel and Trace McSorley under center for the preseason finale.

  • Jake Haener QB | KC

Saints' Jake Haener: Starts but outplayed by Rattler

Haener started Sunday's 30-27 preseason loss to the Titans and completed eight of 17 passes for 87 yards, without a touchdown or interception. He added one rushing attempt for six yards.

Haener and Spencer Rattler alternated two-possession chunks under center, but Rattler led three touchdown drives and got points on all four of his possessions, while the Saints sputtered to just three points on Haener's six drives. Any slim lead Haener had in the competition to begin the regular season as Derek Carr's top backup could have evaporated with this poor performance, but it's possible the Saints will opt to keep the 2023 fourth-round draft pick on their 53-man roster, even if the rookie fifth-round pick Rattler now may be the favorite to occupy the second spot on the quarterback depth chart for the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the Panthers.

  • Saints' Spencer Rattler: Outplays Haener in bid for QB2 spot

Rattler completed seven of 13 passes for 105 yards and one touchdown in Sunday's 30-27 preseason loss to the Titans. He added two rushing attempts for 13 yards.

Jake Haener started under center, but the offense punted on both of his drives. Then, Rattler capped his first possession in the game with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Equanimeous St. Brown and ultimately led three touchdown drives on his four possessions while the Saints mustered only three points in six drives with Haener under center. Rattler likely had some ground to make up in the competition to be Derek Carr's backup quarterback because Haener got the start for this preseason finale, but Sunday's results may be enough to flip the script in the rookie fifth-round draft pick's favor. New Orleans may ultimately keep both Rattler and Haener -- a 2023 fourth-round draft pick -- on the roster heading into the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the Panthers.

  • Will Levis QB | TEN

Titans' Will Levis: Sharp in two-drive tune-up

Levis completed seven of eight passes for 118 yards in Sunday's 30-27 preseason win over the Saints.

Levis hit on his first seven passes before overthrowing Calvin Ridley in the end zone on the second drive, leading to a field goal after Tony Pollard capped the first possession with a one-yard rushing touchdown. The pair of successful possessions came against the Saints' defensive backups, but it was still an encouraging dress rehearsal for Levis and the first-team offense heading into the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the Bears.

  • Anthony Brown QB | BUF

Anthony Brown: Let go by Buffalo

The Bills waived Brown on Sunday, Chris Brown of the Bills Radio Network reports.

Brown was signed by Buffalo on Monday after Mitch Trubisky sustained a knee injury. Brown completed 11 of 12 passes for 102 yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Panthers, but the Bills will let him go in favor of Ben DiNucci. Assuming he clears waivers, Brown will look to catch on with another team as a practice squad/emergency quarterback.

  • John Paddock QB | ATL

John Paddock: Cut again by Atlanta

The Falcons waived Paddock on Sunday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

After being waived by the Falcons on Aug. 1, Paddock rejoined the team 10 days later after Nathan Rourke was let go. Across his two preseason outings, Paddock completed 10 of 20 pass attempts for 82 yards, most of which came in the Falcons' second preseason game against the Ravens. Assuming he clears waivers, Paddock will look to catch on with a team as a practice squad/emergency quarterback.
