  • Davis Mills QB | HOU

Texans' Davis Mills: In line for some drives Saturday

Mills is slated to play the first few possession of Saturday's preseason contest versus the Saints, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.

Mills is unlikely to have Brandin Cooks and Rex Burkhead at his disposal in the Texans' exhibition opener, but he should get some work in with running backs Marlon Mack and Dameon Pierce and wide receivers Nico Collins and Chris Conley, among others. Behind Mills, Kyle Allen is unavailable after testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, leaving all remaining quarterback reps to Jeff Driskel on Saturday.

  • Tua Tagovailoa QB | ATL

Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa: Not likely to play Saturday

Tagovailoa isn't expected to play in Saturday's preseason game in Tampa Bay.

Along with Tagovailoa, the Dolphins are keeping top wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle and running backs Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert on the sideline. In Tagovailoa's place, Teddy Bridgewater and rookie seventh-round pick Skylar Thompson will be under center for the team Saturday.

  • Sam Darnold QB | SEA

Panthers' Sam Darnold: Limited work in preseason contest

Darnold completed two of three passes for 16 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 23-21 preseason victory over the Commanders.

Darnold played on Carolina's second and third offensive possessions. The former began deep in Washington territory after an Antonio Gibson fumble, which Darnold capped with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Rashard Higgins. Darnold appears to be slightly behind Baker Mayfield in the competition to be the Panthers' starting quarterback in Week 1, but after the game coach Matt Rhule said that no decision has been made to this point, per Schuyler Callihan of SI.com.

  • Panthers' Baker Mayfield: Makes Carolina debut

Mayfield completed four of seven passes for 45 yards in Saturday's 23-21 preseason win over the Commanders.

Mayfield started the game and led the offense to a field goal on his only possession. He connected for gains of 19 and 15 yards with Shi Smith and also dumped off a few passes to fullback Giovanni Ricci to account for most of his yardage. It was a relatively positive appearance for Mayfield as he battles for the starting job in Carolina with Sam Darnold. However, after the game, coach Matt Rhule said that no decision has been made about the Week 1 starter, per Augusta Stone of the Panthers' official site.

  • Russell Wilson QB | NYG

Broncos' Russell Wilson: Not suiting up Saturday

Wilson isn't expected to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Cowboys, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports

Wilson's first game action as a Bronco will have to wait until Saturday, Aug. 20 in Buffalo, at the earliest. In Wilson's stead, Josh Johnson will direct Denver's offense first, with Brett Rypien taking the field at some point after him.

  • Bears' Justin Fields: Plays three series

Fields completed four of seven passes for 48 yards in Saturday's preseason opener against Kansas City. He added one rush for 10 yards.

Fields led the Bears' first three drives on the day, all three of which ended in punts. Two of his four completions went for two or fewer yards, and he was also sacked twice. While it wasn't the most impressive preseason debut for Fields, he'll nevertheless enter the season without any threats to his starting job.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Smooth showing in preseason opener

Mahomes went 6-for-7 for 60 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason opener against the Bears.

Mahomes only got one possession in his first tune-up game, but it could hardly have gone much better. He marched his team down the field before tossing a five-yard touchdown pass to Blake Bell. It's possible he'll remain in the game longer next week against Washington.

  • Zach Wilson QB | NO

Jets' Zach Wilson: Out multiple weeks

Wilson suffered a bone bruise and a meniscus tear during Friday's preseason win, which will require minor "trimming" surgery, Brian Costello of the New York Post reports. He's expected to miss 2-4 weeks.

This is probably the best-case scenario for the Jets considering the injury appeared to be far more serious after Wilson limped off the field from a non-contact knee injury. While a meniscus tear can have varying degrees of severity, it doesn't seem as if the 2021 No. 2 overall pick will miss significant time, and he could even be ready for Week 1 of the regular season. Expect Joe Flacco to take all the starting reps in the meantime.

  • Zach Wilson QB | NO

Jets' Zach Wilson: Reportedly suffers bone bruise

Wilson reportedly suffered a bone bruise during Friday's preseason win over the Eagles, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reports.

The news appeared to be dire immediately after Wilson limped to locker room Friday after going down due to a non-contact knee injury, but there seemed to be some growing optimism late in the evening that the second-year signal caller didn't suffer a major injury. This report would certainly seem to echo that statement, but the Jets are reportedly doing additional tests to determine whether Wilson injured his meniscus during the aforementioned play. Expect the Jets to release more information as the weekend progresses.

  • Jeff Driskel QB | WAS

Texans' Jeff Driskel: In line for heavy work Saturday

Driskel will play a majority of Saturday's preseason opener against the Saints after the Texans announced Kyle Allen (illness) will not be available, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Allen normally runs with the second-team offense, but he did not participate in Thursday's evening practice session and subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. Davis Mills will play the first two series of the game, and Driskel will handle the rest of the contest.
