Tim Boyle QB | TEN
Lions' Tim Boyle: Mixed results in preseason opener
Boyle completed nine of 16 passes for 111 yards with one touchdown and one interception during Friday's preseason game against Atlanta.
With the Lions looking to keep only two quarterbacks on the active roster this year, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Boyle did not do himself many favors in this one. Not only was he generally outplayed by David Blough, but Boyle threw a bad interception early in the third quarter after airmailing an open receiver downfield in the second. However, Blough's game-losing mental error in the fourth quarter -- in which he fumbled the snap when Detroit could have run out the clock -- may have evened the score. Expect both signal callers to again see considerable snaps when the Lions take on the Colts in the second preseason game Aug. 20.

David Blough QB | DET
Lions' David Blough: Fumbles game away
Blough completed 18 of 28 passes for 141 yards during Friday's 27-23 preseason loss to Atlanta while adding 22 rushing yards and one fumble on four carries.
Blough had seemingly outplayed the favorite for the backup quarterback job, Tim Boyle, for most of the game, but he blew it by fumbling a snap late in the fourth quarter, when Detroit simply could have ran out the clock. With Detroit reportedly looking to keep only two signal callers on the active roster this fall, Blough probably can't afford any more costly mental errors if he wants to remain in contention for the backup gig.

Baker Mayfield QB | TB
Panthers' Baker Mayfield: Starting Saturday
Mayfield will start Saturday's preseason contest against the Commanders.
Mayfield is currently embroiled in a battle for the starting QB job with Sam Darnold, but it does appear as if the former Browns signal caller has the upper hand at the moment. Both quarterbacks are expected to play only about a series apiece, with the following week of practice likely determining who will enter Week 1 as the starter.

Joshua Dobbs QB | NE
Browns' Joshua Dobbs: Leads all scoring drives
Dobbs completed 10 of 13 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown in Friday's 24-13 win over Jacksonville in preseason action.
Dobbs led the offense's three scoring drives -- the defense produced one touchdown -- and got the bulk of the snaps at quarterback after the coaching decision to rest top backup Jacoby Brissett. There are no changes in the quarterback depth chart, as Brissett will fill in for Deshaun Watson, whose suspension will be at least six games. It is clear that Dobbs is the No. 3 ahead of Josh Rosen, who engineered the final three possessions.

Jalen Hurts QB | PHI
Eagles' Jalen Hurts: Sharp to open preseason
Hurts completed all six of his passes for 80 yards and a touchdown in Friday's 24-21 preseason loss to the Jets.
Hurts played one offensive possession but showed accuracy to all areas of the field. He opened the performance with a 28-yard completion to Quez Watkins and moved the ball patiently down the field before capping the drive with a 22-yard touchdown toss to Dallas Goedert. Hurts is locked in as the Eagles' starting quarterback in 2022, and he'll look to build on his strong 2021 season, when he completed 61 percent of his passes and averaged 7.3 yards per attempt.

Jordan Love QB | GB
Packers' Jordan Love: Mixed bag in preseason opener
Love completed 13 of 24 passes for 176 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions and added 24 yards on four rushes in the Packers' 28-21 preseason loss to the 49ers on Friday night.
With Aaron Rodgers sitting out, it was Love who started the game and played the entirety of the first half. The 2020 first-round pick's night got off to an encouraging start when he connected with Romeo Doubs for a nifty 33-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline to answer an early 49ers field goal. However, Love then short-circuited each of the Packers' next three possessions with interceptions, all which came in San Francisco territory. Love did finish the night on a positive note when he helmed a nine-play, 75-yard march just before halftime that culminated in another 33-yard scoring toss, this time in conjunction with Danny Davis. Love could see another solid allotment of playing time in next Friday night's home exhibition battle against the Saints, even if Rodgers makes a brief appearance to start the game.

Zach Wilson QB | NO
Jets' Zach Wilson: Injury may not be season-ending
The Jets are hopeful that the knee injury sustained by Wilson during Friday's preseason win in Philadelphia isn't season-ending, Connor Hughes of The Athletic reports.
Coach Robert Saleh was less committal in a media session postgame, only noting an initial evaluation of Wilson indicated the ACL in his right knee is intact, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post. In the end, an MRI on Saturday will provide a more official diagnosis. If the optimistic scenario comes to pass, the best-case recovery timetable would be 2-to-3 weeks, with the worst case 4-to-6 weeks, per Hughes. Behind Wilson, Joe Flacco, Mike White and Chris Streveler are the current quarterbacks on the Jets roster.

Trey Lance QB | LAC
49ers' Trey Lance: Tosses TD in preseason cameo
Lance completed four of five passes for 92 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions and added seven yards on one carry during the 49ers' 28-21 preseason win over the Packers on Friday night.
The second-year signal-caller made good use of his brief time on the field, connecting with Danny Gray for a 76-yard touchdown pass to cap off the 49ers' second possession. Lance led his team to points on both of his drives, as San Francisco's first possession also culminated in a Robbie Gould field goal. It was a solid start to the preseason for Lance, who's likely to see more playing time in San Francisco's second exhibition a week from Saturday night against the Vikings in Minnesota.

Jake Browning QB | TB
Bengals' Jake Browning: Sees extended action Friday
Browning completed 13 of 24 passes for 190 yards and gained 14 rushing yards on four carries in Friday's preseason game against the Cardinals.
Brandon Allen got the start for Cincinnati but was knocked out of the game with a concussion after just one series, leaving Browning to run the offense well into the fourth quarter. The 26-year-old held his own, although he didn't lead the Bengals on a scoring drive until late. An undrafted free agent out of Washington in 2019, Browning has yet to attempt a pass in the NFL, but if Allen winds up being sidelined into the regular season, the former could find himself in the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind Joe Burrow (appendix) for Week 1.

Trace McSorley QB | WAS
Cardinals' Trace McSorley: Strong showing in preseason opener
McSorley completed 13 of 22 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown while adding 32 rushing yards on four carries in Friday's preseason game against the Bengals.
With neither Kyler Murray (wrist) nor Colt McCoy in the lineup, McSorley played the entire first half for the Cardinals and led his club to four scoring drives, capping the first with a four-yard TD strike to depth wideout Andre Baccellia (ankle). McSorley is competing with undrafted rookie Jarrett Guarantano for the No. 3 spot on the depth chart, and the former Raven likely has a leg up in the battle after this performance.
