• Wayne Simmonds: Announces retirement

  Simmonds has announced the end of his playing career, per Sportsnet.ca. Simmonds logged 1,037 NHL games with Philadelphia, LA, Toronto, Nashville, Buffalo and New Jersey. During his career, he collected 263 goals, 526 points and 1,313 PIM. Simmonds also featured in 53 playoff games, recording eight goals, 22 points and 122 PIM. In his final campaign in 2022-23, he had two assists, 49 PIM and 44 hits in 18 contests with the Maple Leafs.

  Simmonds was assigned to AHL Toronto on Sunday, per CapFriendly. Simmonds has two assists, 44 hits and 49 PIM in 18 games with the Maple Leafs this season. His demotion helped create some cap space to allow Toronto to sign top prospect Matthew Knies to an entry-level contract.

  Simmonds was called up by Toronto on Friday, according to David Alter of Sports Illustrated. Simmonds has two assists, 40 PIM and 40 hits in 17 games with the Maple Leafs this season. It wouldn't be surprising to see the 34-year-old draw into the lineup Saturday versus Montreal. Toronto is locked into the second seed in the Atlantic Division, so the Leafs can afford to use their four final contests to rest key players before the postseason.

  Simmonds was reassigned to AHL Toronto on Thursday, Kevin McGran of The Toronto Star reports. Simmonds was a cap casualty with the Maple Leafs activating Ryan O'Reilly (finger) from long-term injured reserve. Simmonds will presumably be back with the big club as a reserve option during the playoffs.
