Schneider announced his retirement from professional hockey Tuesday, according to Phil Stacey of The Salem News. Schneider posted 171 wins, a 2.43 GAA, a .918 save percentage and 26 shutouts in 410 career contests for the Canucks, Devils and Islanders across 13 NHL seasons. The 37-year-old netminder spent most of the past two campaigns in the AHL with Bridgeport.

Schneider was assigned to AHL Bridgeport on Monday. Schneider didn't see any NHL action behind Ilya Sorokin during the absence of Semyon Varlamov (lower body). The Islanders activated Varlamov from injured reserve Monday in a corresponding move.

Schneider may not travel with the team on their upcoming road trip, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. Semyon Varlamov (lower body) has been on injured reserve and will make the trip with the team, which would suggest that he is getting close to a return to action. If the Islanders believe Varlamov is ready to at least back up Ilya Sorokin on Sunday in Seattle, they may elect to send Schneider back to the AHL.

Schneider was an emergency recall from AHL Bridgeport on Wednesday. Schneider has a 2.51 GAA and .921 save percentage in 15 AHL contests this season. He was summoned because Semyon Varlamov is dealing with a lower-body injury. The Islanders will play against the Rangers on Thursday and Florida on Friday, so if Varlamov isn't available for either of those contests, then perhaps Schneider will start in one of them.
