  Wideman (back) told reporters Tuesday that he will not play again, Eric Engels of Sportsnet reports. Wideman was on injured reserve for all of 2023-24 due to a back injury. He was limited to just 46 games last season, which was his second campaign following a one-year stint in the KHL. Wideman ends his NHL career with 78 points in 291 appearances.

  Wideman had an assist and one blocked shot over 8:00 of ice time in Thursday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Rangers. Wideman picked up the secondary helper on Alex Belzile's first-period strike. It was just the fifth point in 34 games for the veteran, who has taken a secondary role on a blue line filled with young defensemen.

  Wideman had two shots on goal, three blocked shots and two penalty minutes over 12:47 of ice time in Tuesday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Hurricanes. Wideman returned to the ice following an eight-game absence due to an upper-body injury. He was eased back into the lineup, playing 18 shifts, the lowest amount among Montreal defensemen. He's been in and out of the lineup, either by injury or healthy scratch, and has just four points in 33 games. His last point was an assist in a 7-2 loss to Buffalo on Nov. 22.

  Wideman (upper body) will be activated off injured reserve and return to the lineup Tuesday versus Carolina, Marc Antoine Godin of The Athletic reports. Wideman should return to a second-pairing role against the Hurricanes. He's picked up four helpers through 32 contests this campaign.
