• Penguins' Ryan Shea: Picks up power-play helper

  Shea posted a power-play assist in Monday's 7-3 win over the Flyers. Shea ended a seven-game point drought with his helper on a Blake Lizotte tally late in the contest. Don't expect Shea to be a factor with the man advantage moving forward, as Kris Letang, Erik Karlsson and Matt Grzelcyk have firm grips on power-play time. For the season, Shea has struggled with offense in generally, collecting two assists and seven shots on net as well as 24 blocked shots and a minus-5 rating over 17 appearances.

  Shea notched an assist and four blocked shots in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Canucks. Shea set up a Blake Lizotte tally in the first period. The 27-year-old Shea has played in six of the Penguins' last seven games, though he remains in competition with Jack St. Ivany, Ryan Graves and Owen Pickering (illness) for playing time. Shea has added four shots on net, 13 blocked shots and a minus-3 rating over nine outings this season.

  Shea was scratched for Thursday's 2-1 overtime win over the Ducks, the 10th time in 12 games he's sat out. Shea remains in the NHL as a seventh defenseman, but he's behind Jack St. Ivany on the depth chart for a third-pairing job. In his two appearances, Shea has a minus-2 rating, two shots on goal and five blocked shots. The Penguins' defense hasn't exactly been a standout group so far, but Shea has minimal upside on offense -- he produced just one goal and no assists over 31 regular-season outings in 2023-24.

  Shea played in 31 games as a rookie this season but managed just one point to go with 24 hits, 24 blocks and 17 shots. Shea started all nine April games during the Penguins' last-gasp push for a postseason spot, seemingly earning the trust of the coaching staff. If the team would like to keep Shea in a third-pairing role for next season, the Pens will need to sign him to an extension prior to July 1 or risk him agreeing to terms with a different team.

  Shea was demoted to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sunday, per CapFriendly. Shea has not seen any NHL action since Dec. 8 despite various callups. The rookie blueliner is scoreless through 22 NHL games this season.
