For the first time since way back in 1935, the Chicago Cubs have won 100 games. They walloped the Pirates on Monday night (CHC 12, PIT 2) to improve their record to 100-56 on the season.
This is only the sixth time in franchise history the Cubs have won 100 games, and in four of the previous five instances, they went to the World Series. Of course, that was long before the days of wild cards and divisional play. Here are Chicago's 100-win seasons:
- 1906: 116-36, lost World Series to White Sox in six games
- 1907: 107-45, won World Series over Tigers in five games
- 1909: 104-49, did not go to postseason
- 1910: 104-50, lost World Series to Athletics in five games
- 1935: 100-54, lost World Series to Tigers in five games
- 2016: 100-56 and counting
The Cubs still have six games remaining, so they could become baseball's first 106-win team since the 2001 Mariners won a ridiculous 116 games. Only 14 teams in history have won as many as 106 games in a season.
Chicago has already clinched not only the NL Central title, but also the best record in all of baseball. They'll have home field advantage through the NLCS. The AL has home field advantage in the World Series thanks to the All-Star Game.
The Cubs will play the NL Wild Card Game winner in the NLDS. The Mets, Cardinals, and Giants are all fighting for those two spots.
