The Marlins and Pirates are nearing a deal that would send first baseman Gaby Sanchez to Pittsburgh with Gorkys Hernandez and a competitive balance draft pick to Miami, Ken Rosenthal reported Tuesday.
Sanchez would give the Pirates another right-handed option at first base to platoon with Garrett Jones. Casey McGehee has struggled again, hitting .230/.297/.377 on the season after hitting .223/.280/.346 for Milwaukee in 2011. Sanchez has a career .260/.334/.422 line but has a .556 OPS this season.
Hernandez is a speedy outfielder but lacks pop. He has failed to post a slugging percentage over .400 at any level above rookie ball. The real prize for Miami is the pick the Pirates would send over, falling in the supplemental round following the first round of next year's first-year player draft.
