Darren O'Day: Announces retirement
O'Day announced Monday via his personal Twitter account that he has retired from professional baseball.
The 40-year-old right-hander will step away from the game coming off an injury-plagued 2022 campaign in Atlanta wherein he logged just 21.2 innings with the big club while battling a left calf strain and a sprained right big toe. O'Day appeared in 644 games over parts of 15 seasons in the majors with the Angels, Mets, Rangers, Orioles and Yankees in addition to Atlanta, logging a lifetime 2.59 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. The longtime setup man made his lone All-Star team in 2015 as a member of Baltimore.

Braves' Darren O'Day: Moves to 60-day IL
O'Day (calf/toe) was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list Thursday.
O'Day has been out since mid-July with a calf injury, and he had his minor-league rehab assignment shut down earlier this week after suffering a sprained right big toe. The 37-year-old won't be eligible to return from the 60-day IL until mid-September, but it's unclear if he'll be recovered from the toe injury by that point.

Braves' Darren O'Day: Rehab assignment shut down
O'Day (calf) had his rehab assignment shut down after he sustained a sprained right big toe during his appearance with Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday.
O'Day has been dealing with a left calf strain since mid-July, but he had been with the Triple-A club on a rehab assignment since Aug. 9. He's posted a 2.57 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in seven innings over seven rehab appearances at the Triple-A level, but it's not yet clear how his toe injury will impact his return timetable.

Braves' Darren O'Day: Shifts rehab to Triple-A
Atlanta transferred O'Day's (calf) rehab assignment from High-A Rome to Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday.
O'Day, who struck out a batter in a perfect inning during his lone appearance for Rome on Friday, will likely pitch in one or two games for Gwinnett before coming off the 15-day injured list as soon as this weekend. The veteran right-hander turned in a 4.15 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 21.2 innings out of the big-league bullpen this season before going on the 15-day injured list July 13 with a left calf strain.

Braves' Darren O'Day: Beginning rehab assignment
O'Day (calf) will begin a rehab assignment at High-A Rome on Friday.
O'Day has been on the injured list since July 13 due to a left calf strain, but his rehab assignment should be the final step in his recovery process. It wouldn't be surprising to see the right-hander require several appearances in the minors since he's been sidelined nearly a month, but he should be in consideration to rejoin Atlanta's bullpen soon.

Braves' Darren O'Day: Sidelined with calf strain
Atlanta placed O'Day on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a strained left calf muscle.
Atlanta will swap one right-handed reliever off the IL for another, as closer Kenley Jansen (irregular heartbeat) was reinstated to the active roster in a corresponding move. Though injuries had marred three of his past four seasons, O'Day had been in good health during his age-39 campaign before the calf issue surfaced. In 28 appearances out of the Atlanta bullpen, O'Day has picked up two wins and six holds while turning in a 4.15 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 26:10 K:BB across 21.2 innings.

Braves' Darren O'Day: Earns win in relief
O'Day (1-0) earned the win in relief Friday against the Padres after tossing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
The 39-year-old veteran has enjoyed a strong start to the season with Atlanta, as he's yet to give up a run or a hit through his first three appearances while also fanning three, recording a hold and a win. He's not going to be able to keep this up this level of performance for a prolonged stretch, but he's delivering quality appearances every time he steps on the mound for one of the best teams in the National League.

Braves' Darren O'Day: Makes Opening Day roster
O'Day had his contract selected by Atlanta on Sunday.
The 39-year-old was in camp as a non-roster invitee, and he apparently showed enough to warrant Atlanta adding him to the 40-man roster ahead of Opening Day. O'Day had a 3.38 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB over 10.2 innings last year and should operate in middle relief.

Braves' Darren O'Day: Healthy for spring training
O'Day (hamstring) is listed among Atlanta's available relievers for Thursday's Grapefruit League game against Tampa Bay, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
O'Day, who is attending camp with Atlanta as a non-roster invitee, looks to be healthy again after he was shut down for the season last July due to a left hamstring injury that required surgery. Before picking up the injury, the soft-tossing righty made 12 appearances out of the Yankees bullpen, recording a 3.38 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 10.2 innings while collecting four holds. He's turned in scoreless innings in his first two spring appearances with Atlanta, and another solid outing Thursday could put him on solid ground for a spot in the club's Opening Day bullpen.

Braves' Darren O'Day: Joins Atlanta on minors deal
O'Day (hamstring) signed a minor-league deal with Atlanta on Monday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
O'Day recorded a 1.25 ERA for Atlanta in 2019 and 2020, though that came in a tiny sample of just 21.2 innings. Injuries, including a hamstring strain which required season-ending surgery in July of this past season, have prevented the veteran righty from tossing more than 20 innings in any of the last four campaigns, but he's been good when available, cruising to a 2.58 ERA over that stretch. Just how much he has to offer in his age-39 season following all those injuries is not yet clear, however.

Darren O'Day: Declines option
O'Day's (hamstring) mutual option for the 2022 season was declined Thursday.
O'Day had a player option worth $1.4 million, which then converted to a $3.2 million club option, which both he and the Yankees declined. The veteran righty was limited to only 10.2 innings in 2021 due to a hamstring injury, though he managed to post a 3.38 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with an 11:4 KBB prior to going down.

Yankees' Darren O'Day: Shifts to 60-day IL
O'Day (hamstring) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday.
It was announced this week the veteran right-hander will undergo season-ending surgery on his left hamstring, so it was only a matter of time before he was moved to the 60-day IL. O'Day was limited to only 10.2 innings this season and has yet to decide if he plans to continue his career in 2022.

Yankees' Darren O'Day: Set for season-ending surgery
O'Day will undergo season-ending surgery on his left hamstring Wednesday, David Lennon of Newsday reports.
This news comes as no surprise, as manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that the right-hander's season was likely over. O'Day, who posted a 3.38 ERA and 1.22 WHIP across 10.2 innings this season, will likely be transferred to the 60-day injured list in the coming days. The 38-year-old has a player option to remain with the Yankees next season, but per Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record, he has yet to decide whether he will pitch in 2022.

Yankees' Darren O'Day: Likely done for season
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that O'Day is expected to miss the rest of the season after suffering a "significant" left hamstring strain earlier this month, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.
Boone didn't disclose whether O'Day would require surgery to address the hamstring injury, which is presumably a Grade 3 strain. Barring a speedier recovery than anticipated, O'Day, who picked up the injury in a pre-game workout, will finish the season with a 3.38 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and four holds across his 12 appearances out of the New York bullpen.

Yankees' Darren O'Day: Hamstring strain likely serious
Manager Aaron Boone said O'Day is dealing with a "significant" strain to his left hamstring, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
The Yankees' skipper detailed that O'Day crumpled to the ground during a pregame workout Tuesday. A specific timeframe for the righty's return is unclear at this time, but an activation immediately following the All-Star break seems unlikely.

Yankees' Darren O'Day: Out with strained hamstring
O'Day was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a left hamstring strain.
The veteran right-hander returned from a lengthy absence due to a shoulder injury last week, and O'Day will return to the injured list after making only two appearances. Nick Nelson was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move.

O'Day (shoulder) is on track to be activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

O'Day (shoulder) is expected to make one more minor-league rehab appearance Sunday, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports.
The right-handed reliever has made two appearances with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre thus far, allowing two hits and no runs while striking out four over two innings. Should his final rehab outing go well, O'Day could be activated by the Yankees early next week.
