Venters (shoulder) underwent surgery in mid-August to address a torn capsule in his left shoulder and will miss the rest of the season, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
Venters has been on the injured list since early July and now won't be able to throw for about four months, so it's no guarantee he'll be ready for spring training, assuming he opts to continue his career. The 34-year-old finished the season with 11 runs allowed and a 12:10 K:BB across eight innings with the Braves and Nationals.

This move comes after Venters suffered a setback during a rehab appearance earlier in the week. The right-hander won't be eligible to return until Sept. 10 following his move to the 60-day shelf. Daniel Hudson, who was acquired from the Blue Jays on Wednesday, was added to the roster in a corresponding move.

Washington is poised to add two veteran relievers to the 40-man and active rosters ahead of the series opener in Miami, with Fernando Rodney also slated to get the call to the big leagues. The Nationals already cleared a spot for one of the relievers by releasing Trevor Rosenthal on Sunday, but another player will still need to be removed from the 40-man roster later Tuesday. Venters failed to find much success in nine appearances out of the Atlanta bullpen earlier this season and didn't seem to get back on track during his time in Harrisburg. He allowed only one run and six hits in seven innings with the affiliate, but the 1.29 ERA was accompanied by a 4:6 K:BB.

Venters retired the only batter he faced to record his first save of the season in Saturday's 6-4 win over the Diamondbacks.

Jacob Webb got the first two outs before Snitker brought in Venters to face David Peralta, who grounded out to first base to end the game.
