Shuck was one of 40 minor-league players who were informed of their release last week with the expectation that there won't be a minor-league season in 2020. The outfielder spent the 2019 season in the Pittsburgh organization, appearing in 27 games for the big club and batting .213.

He picked up the RBI on a single in the first inning and then swiped second. After reaching on an error in the sixth, Shuck tried to steal another bag, but this time he unsuccessfully read Madison Bumgarner's move and was picked off. Shuck's time in center will likely be limited to Opening Day while Starling Marte recovers from a migraine headache. Shuck was questionable to even make the Pirates, roster, but he will now be an Opening Day starter just 24 hours later. GM Neal Huntington mentioned on The Fan 93.7 pregame radio show that while Melky Cabrera will see the majority of right field starts with Gregory Polanco (shoulder) out, Shuck will also play in right. The announcement was somewhat surprising, given that Huntington didn't mention Pablo Reyes, who made frequent right field starts in September, at all. In the end, performance will probably dictate whether Shuck or Reyes sees more action in the outfield.

Seeing his first action in the majors since 2016, Shuck tried to make up for a lot of lost time with his big performance. His current 2.500 OPS is a wee bit higher than his .634 career mark, though, so even if he earns a platoon role in the Marlins' outfield, Friday's game could well end up being the high point of his season.

Shuck spent the 2017 season in the Twins' organization, playing in 123 games for Triple-A Rochester. During those contests, the outfielder hit .259/.325/.368 with four home runs and 37 RBI. Looking ahead, he will get a chance to make the Opening Day roster for Miami, but will likely begin the year in Triple-A yet again.
