J.B. Shuck: Cut loose by Washington
The Nationals released Shuck on Monday, Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic reports.
Shuck was one of 40 minor-league players who were informed of their release last week with the expectation that there won't be a minor-league season in 2020. The outfielder spent the 2019 season in the Pittsburgh organization, appearing in 27 games for the big club and batting .213.

Nationals' J.B. Shuck: Joins Nationals on minors deal
Shuck signed with the Nationals as a non-roster invitee Wednesday.
Shuck has appeared in 461 games at the big-league level, including 27 for the Pirates last year. However, he hasn't exactly impressed, hitting .243/.296/.314. He attempted a conversion to a two-way role with Triple-A Indianapolis last season with mixed results. His 3.79 ERA in 19 innings was quite respectable, but it came with an 18.9 percent walk rate.

Pirates' J.B. Shuck: Trying two-way role
Shuck will attempt to convert to being a two-way player with Triple-A Indianapolis, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic Pittsburgh reports.
Shuck owns a career .243/.296/.314 slash line over parts of seven big-league seasons, leaving him a fifth outfielder at best. If he can also serve as a competent reliever, that could be enough to keep him on a big-league roster, but there's no particular reason to believe he can serve a fantasy-relevant role on either side of the ball. The 31-year-old last worked as a pitcher back in college.

Pirates' J.B. Shuck: Outrighted to Triple-A
Shuck was outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday, Nubyjas Wilborn of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Shuck will report to Indianapolis after passing through waivers unclaimed. Prior to being designated for assignment, the outfielder hit .213/.339/.255 in 27 games for the Pirates.

Pirates' J.B. Shuck: Designated for assignment
Shuck was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Saturday.
Shuck's 14.0 percent walk rate was strong, but that's about all he had to show for his 57 plate appearances, as he slashed just .213/.339/.255. Reliever Dovydas Neverauskas was recalled in a corresponding move.

Pirates' J.B. Shuck: Steals bag
Shuck went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a stolen base and a caught stealing in a 4-1 victory over the Giants on Friday.
He picked up the RBI on a single in the first inning and then swiped second. After reaching on an error in the sixth, Shuck tried to steal another bag, but this time he unsuccessfully read Madison Bumgarner's move and was picked off. He finished the game in center field because of an injury to Starling Marte. Shuck is hitting .267 with one extra-base hit, two RBI, three runs and a steal in 30 at-bats this season.

Pirates' J.B. Shuck: Benched after back-to-back starts
Shuck is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals.
Shuck had made back-to-back starts in the corner outfield, but he'll sit in the series finale in favor of Jason Martin. Both Martin and Shuck seem to be stuck in a timeshare for the outfield spot opposite Melky Cabrera while Gregory Polanco (shoulder), Corey Dickerson (shoulder) and Lonnie Chisenhall (finger) are on the 10-day injured list.

Pirates' J.B. Shuck: Starting in center field
Shuck will bat seventh and start in center field Thursday against the Reds.
Shuck's time in center will likely be limited to Opening Day while Starling Marte recovers from a migraine headache. Shuck was questionable to even make the Pirates, roster, but he will now be an Opening Day starter just 24 hours later. GM Neal Huntington mentioned on The Fan 93.7 pregame radio show that while Melky Cabrera will see the majority of right field starts with Gregory Polanco (shoulder) out, Shuck will also play in right. The announcement was somewhat surprising, given that Huntington didn't mention Pablo Reyes, who made frequent right field starts in September, at all. In the end, performance will probably dictate whether Shuck or Reyes sees more action in the outfield.

Pirates' J.B. Shuck: Makes Opening Day roster
Shuck's contract was purchased Thursday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
With Lonnie Chisenhall (broken finger) opening the year on the IL, Shuck was able to make the team at the last minute. Melky Cabrera appears to be Chisenhall's primary replacement, but Shuck could get an odd start while also serving as a defensive replacement.

Pirates' J.B. Shuck: Could make Opening Day roster
Shuck could break camp with the Pirates if Lonnie Chisenhall (hand) is forced to open the season on the injured list, Nubyjas Wilborn of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Shuck and Chisenhall will both travel to Cincinnati ahead of Thursday's season opener before a decision is made. Even if Shuck does break camp with the Pirates, it would likely be in a reserve role given his .192/.255/.231 line in 70 games with the Marlins last season.

Shuck went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in Thursday's game against the Yankees.
Shuck belted his first homer of the spring, a two-run shot that went sailing over the right-field fence in the second inning. He's 2-for-9 with two runs scored, a home run and two RBI so far as a non-roster invitee.

Pirates' J.B. Shuck: Inks minors deal with Pirates
Shuck signed a minor-league contract with the Pirates on Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Shuck split time between Triple-A New Orleans and Miami last season, hitting .327/.405/.461 in 51 games with the Baby Cakes but struggling to a .192/.255/.231 line across 70 games with the Marlins. The 31-year-old owns a career .244/.294/.316 line across parts of six major-league seasons.

Marlins' J.B. Shuck: Stays in organization
The Marlins outrighted Shuck to Triple-A New Orleans on Saturday.
Shuck will stick around in the organization as minor-league depth after none of the other 29 teams were willing to put a waiver claim in for the outfielder. The 31-year-old slashed .192/.255/.231 across 142 plate appearances while seeing action in 70 games for the Marlins.

Marlins' J.B. Shuck: Designated for assignment
Shuck was designated for assignment by Miami on Thursday, Craig Mish of SiriusXM Radio reports.
Shuck has played in 70 games for the Marlins this season, slashing an unsightly .192/.255/.231 with just four extra-base hits and four RBI across 142 plate appearances. Unless claimed off waivers or traded, Shuck will report to Triple-A New Orleans, where he spent a little time back in early April. It appears as though Garrett Cooper (wrist) may return to the fold in a corresponding move, though the club has yet to make an official announcement.

Marlins' J.B. Shuck: Back on bench Sunday
Shuck is out of the lineup Sunday against the Orioles, Andre Fernandez of the Miami Herald reports.
Thanks to the designated hitter being available for the Marlins in Baltimore this weekend, Shuck had entered the lineup for the first two games of the series, and three in a row dating back to Thursday's series finale against the Giants. After recording four hits versus San Francisco, Shuck turned in a pair of 0-for-4 performances against Baltimore and now looks like he'll see his brief run of steady at-bats come to a close unless an injury hits one of the Marlins' regular outfielders.

Marlins' J.B. Shuck: Bangs out four hits Thursday
Shuck went 4-for-7 with two doubles and a run scored in Thursday's extra-innings loss to the Giants.
Remarkably, it's Shuck's second four-hit performance of the year despite a poor .212/.278/.263 slash line through 52 games. The 30-year-old will continue to serve as a depth outfield option for the Marlins, getting occasional starts when a right-hander is on the mound for the opposition.

Marlins' J.B. Shuck: To join Marlins on Friday
Shuck will be called up by Miami prior to Friday's game against the Pirates, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Shuck began the season with Triple-A New Orleans, and has gone 4-for-21 with a pair of RBI during his first seven appearances. The 30-year-old likely won't make much of a fantasy impact with the Marlins, and will be utilized as a reserve outfielder behind Derek Dietrich, Lewis Brinson and Cameron Maybin. Shuck didn't appear in a big-league game during the 2017 campaign, though he did play in 81 the year before with the White Sox.

Marlins' J.B. Shuck: Four hits in 2018 debut
Shuck got the start in right field and hit sixth Friday, going 4-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored in a 7-2 win over the Pirates.
Seeing his first action in the majors since 2016, Shuck tried to make up for a lot of lost time with his big performance. His current 2.500 OPS is a wee bit higher than his .634 career mark, though, so even if he earns a platoon role in the Marlins' outfield, Friday's game could well end up being the high point of his season.

Marlins' J.B. Shuck: Signs with Marlins
Shuck signed a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training with Miami on Friday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
Shuck spent the 2017 season in the Twins' organization, playing in 123 games for Triple-A Rochester. During those contests, the outfielder hit .259/.325/.368 with four home runs and 37 RBI. Looking ahead, he will get a chance to make the Opening Day roster for Miami, but will likely begin the year in Triple-A yet again.
