  • Brock Holt: Announces retirement

Holt announced his retirement from professional baseball Thursday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Holt had a .579 OPS in 77 games with the Rangers last season but didn't see the field in 2022 after he failed to make Atlanta's roster for Opening Day. In addition to his stint with Texas, the 34-year-old spent most of his 10-year career in Boston but also saw action with the Pirates, Brewers and Nationals. He had a .262/.332/.362 slash line with 25 home runs, 234 RBI, 316 runs and 41 steals in 751 games.

  • Brock Holt: Cut loose by Atlanta

Holt was released by Atlanta on Thursday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

Holt was in camp as a non-roster invitee and was trying to win a bench spot, but he was granted his release after it became apparent he wouldn't beat out either of Phil Gosselin or Pat Valaika for a utility infield job. Holt will now look elsewhere to find a job, but getting an opportunity in the majors may prove difficult, especially with spring training winding down. He's heading into his age-34 season and has hit .209/.281/.291 over the last two years.

  • Rangers' Brock Holt: Back from injured list

Holt (illness) was activated off the COVID-19 injured list Tuesday.

Holt wound up missing three weeks while on the injured list. His playing time had already started to slip in August, and with the Rangers nowhere near the playoff picture, it's likely he spends most of the remainder of the schedule on the bench while the team gives at-bats to younger options.

  • Rangers' Brock Holt: Starts up rehab assignment

Holt (illness) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.

Holt will likely require a few games in the minors to get his timing back at the plate after he was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Aug. 23 following his positive test for the virus. Once he's reinstated, Holt will likely fill a utility role in the Texas infield.

  • Rangers' Brock Holt: Completes quarantine

Holt (illness) was cleared to rejoin the Rangers for workouts over the weekend, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

According to Levi Weaver of The Athletic, Holt took at-bats versus rehabbing pitcher Dane Dunning (COVID-19 injured list) in live batting practice Monday, but the Rangers have yet to reveal when the veteran utility infielder might return from the COVID-19 IL. Holt has filled the strong side of a platoon at third base with Charlie Culberson for much of the season, but both players are likely to see limited opportunities in September with Yonny Hernandez having since taken over as the Rangers' preferred option at the hot corner.

  • Rangers' Brock Holt: Moves to COVID list

The Rangers placed Holt on the COVID-19 injured list Monday, freelance baseball journalist Jeff Wilson reports.

Holt and pitchers Mike Foltynewicz and Drew Anderson were added to the list Monday, three days after infielder Charlie Culberson was deactivated for similar reasons. The Rangers aren't disclosing which of the four, if any, have tested positive for the virus, though Chris Halicke of SI.com relays that Holt is experiencing mild symptoms, despite being vaccinated. The 33-year-old won't travel with the Rangers for the team's upcoming three-game road trip in Cleveland, and he seems unlikely to be activated from the IL until at least next week. With Holt and Culberson out, Nick Solak will likely serve as the Rangers' top utility man in the interim.

  • Rangers' Brock Holt: Playing time trending down

Holt is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics.

Holt's playing time has tailed off of late with Texas facing a slew of left-handed pitchers, but he was also on the bench Tuesday versus a right-handed pitcher (Seattle's Logan Gilbert) and may have lost hold of a strong-side platoon role at third base. The 41-76 Rangers are well removed from contention and are likely eager to evaluate younger players over the final month and a half of the season, so the 23-year-old Yonny Hernandez will likely get more opportunities at third base at the expense of the 33-year-old Holt, who will become a free agent this winter.

  • Rangers' Brock Holt: Remains on bench

Holt will sit for the fourth straight game Friday against Oakland.

While Holt has spent more than his fair share of time on the bench this week, it's not certain that he's slipping into a reserve role. Such a move would arguably be deserved, as his .577 OPS on the season isn't much better than the .557 mark he recorded last season, but three of his absences in this stretch have come against lefties like Friday's starter Cole Irvin, so he may still be in the same platoon role he's occupied all year. Charlie Culberson starts at the hot corner in his absence.
