McGuire signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Thursday and was assigned to Triple-A Louisville. The 32-year-old right-hander previously made 27 big-league appearances with the Reds, Blue Jays and Angels between the 2017 and 2018 seasons, logging a 5.23 ERA and 1.47 WHIP across 51.2 innings. He most recently pitched in the independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball with the Gastonia Honey Hunters before landing the minor-league deal with Cincinnati.

  • Deck McGuire: Cut loose by Tampa Bay

The Rays released McGuire last week, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. One of 25 minor-league players let go by Tampa Bay, McGuire will presumably try to find work either with another organization or in a foreign league due to the uncertainty that a minor-league season will be held in 2020. McGuire returned to North America after spending the 2019 season in the Korea Baseball Organization as a member of the Samsung Lions, with whom he posted a 5.05 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 112.1 innings.

  • Rays' Deck McGuire: Heads back to minors camp

The Rays reassigned McGuire to their minor-league camp Thursday, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports. The non-roster invitee never had much hope to break camp for a Rays squad that's overflowing both with rotation and bullpen depth. He'll likely begin the season with Triple-A Durham.

  • Rays' Deck McGuire: Joins Rays

McGuire signed a minor-league deal with the Rays on Friday that includes an invite to big-league camp, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. McGuire spent the 2019 season in the Korean Baseball Organization with the Samsung Lions, but he struggled in 21 starts with a 5.05 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 100:66 K:BB over 112.1 innings. The 30-year-old is a longshot to make Tampa Bay's Opening Day roster, but he could still provide organizational depth as a starter or long reliever.

  • Deck McGuire: Signs overseas

McGuire signed a contract with the Samsung Lions of the KBO on Wednesday, Dan Kurtz of MyKBO.net reports. McGuire spent time with three organizations in 2018, though he only appeared in the majors for the Blue Jays and Angels. Across 38 big-league innings, the 29-year-old right-hander struggled to a 6.16 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 33:26 K:BB.

  • Angels' Deck McGuire: Outrighted from 40-man roster

McGuire was outrighted from the Angels' 40-man roster Friday. McGuire was dealt to the Angels from Texas in mid-June and went on to make 17 appearances with Los Angeles in 2018, posting a disastrous 6.07 ERA and 1.69 WHIP with a 26:21 K:BB in 29.2 innings. This move will allow the team to free up another spot on the 40-man roster in order to protect a younger prospect from the Rule 5 draft.

  • Angels' Deck McGuire: Recalled from Salt Lake

McGuire was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. McGuire will rejoin the big-league team after shuttling back and forth between Los Angeles and the minors throughout the past month. Across 16 appearances in the majors this year, he's logged a rough 6.47 ERA and 1.62 WHIP with a 27:20 K:BB in 32 innings. He will likely be deployed in low-leverage spots.

  • Angels' Deck McGuire: Shipped back to minors

McGuire was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic Los Angeles reports. McGuire was recalled 10 days ago to replace Hansel Robles on the active roster, but with Robles returning, McGuire was no longer needed in the big leagues. He'll head back to the minors for a brief amount of time before likely returning when rosters expand in September.

  • Angels' Deck McGuire: Recalled from Salt Lake

McGuire was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. • Angels' Deck McGuire: Turns in short outing vs. Indians

McGuire (0-2) allowed three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one as he recorded one out and picked up the loss Sunday against Cleveland. McGuire was removed from the game after retiring just one batter on 25 pitches. He surrendered a three-run homer to Jose Ramirez prior to exiting his outing. McGuire's spot start certainly didn't go as planned, as the Angels were hopeful he'd eat up innings with Tyler Skaggs (hip) on the shelf. Following McGuire's brief start, he figures to head to the bullpen or the minor leagues with Skaggs expected to return next time through the rotation.

  • Angels' Deck McGuire: Called up for spot start

The Angels recalled McGuire from Triple-A Salt Lake ahead of his scheduled start Sunday against the Indians, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. McGuire will pick up his fourth start of the season in the majors after the Angels required a replacement in the rotation for the injured Tyler Skaggs (hip). Skaggs, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list Saturday, said he only expects to miss one start due to the left adductor strain, so McGuire could transition to a bullpen role or head back to the minors after taking the hill Sunday. Over his 25 innings in the big leagues in 2018, McGuire has surrendered 17 earned runs on 25 hits -- including eight home runs -- and 15 walks.

  • Angels' Deck McGuire: Expected to make spot start

McGuire is likely to be called up Sunday to make a spot start in Cleveland in place of Tyler Skaggs (adductor), Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Skaggs is only expected to miss one start, so McGuire will likely not be up long. The 29-year-old has a 6.12 ERA in 25 major-league innings this season, leaving little reason to believe he'll be a capable fantasy fill-in.

  • Angels' Deck McGuire: Sent down to Salt Lake

McGuire was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday. McGuire and Oliver Drake were cast off the active roster in order to make room for Albert Pujols (knee) and Jaime Barria. Across seven appearances with the Angels this year, McGuire has logged a 5.94 ERA and 1.56 WHIP over 16.2 innings. He will likely return to the rotation at the Triple-A level in order to keep him available as an option if Los Angeles requires a spot starter in the future.

  • Angels' Deck McGuire: Moves back to bullpen

McGuire covered 1.1 scoreless innings in relief Sunday in the Angels' 14-5 win over the Astros. He gave up one hit and two walks in the 35-pitch appearance. McGuire's previous appearance came July 15 against the Dodgers, when he started a bullpen game for the Angels in the two sides' final game before the All-Star break. With the Angels welcoming back Nick Tropeano (shoulder) from the 10-day disabled list Saturday, McGuire was bumped from the rotation and looks set to stick around in a long-relief role with the big club for the time being.

  • Angels' Deck McGuire: Set to start Sunday

McGuire will start the Angels' game Sunday against the Dodgers, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic Los Angeles reports. McGuire returned to the big-league roster Wednesday and made a one-inning relief appearance the same day. Though he'll technically pitch on only three days' rest, McGuire shouldn't face any strict limitations after having previously made 10 starts between the majors and minors this season. He'll assume the rotation spot of Garrett Richards (elbow), who was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday and will soon be slated for season-ending Tommy John surgery.

  • Angels' Deck McGuire: Headed back to majors

McGuire will be promoted from Triple-A Salt Lake to the big leagues Wednesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. McGuire was optioned to the minors Tuesday, but he's set to return to Los Angeles nearly 24 hours later. He's made eight appearances (two starts) in the big leagues this season, accruing a 6.41 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with an 18:10 K:BB over 19.2 innings.

  • Angels' Deck McGuire: Optioned to Triple-A

McGuire was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday. He fanned six in three innings in his start against the Dodgers over the weekend, but the Angels don't need him in the rotation before the All-Star break, so he was sent down. Michael Hermosillo was recalled in a corresponding move.

  • Angels' Deck McGuire: Strikes out six in three innings

McGuire allowed one hit and two walks while striking out six over three scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Saturday. The 29-year-old induced 10 swinging strikes on 61 pitches. He had given up eight runs over 8.1 innings in his first three appearances with the Angels, and he also struggled with Toronto to begin the year. This was a step in the right direction and may afford McGuire some more spot starts down the road, but it looks like he will be headed to the bullpen or Triple-A Salt Lake for the time being with Tyler Skaggs (groin) set to return next week.

  • Angels' Deck McGuire: Traded to Angels

The Rangers traded McGuire to the Angels for cash considerations or a player-to-be-named Tuesday. McGuire was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Monday and now heads to his third organization since being designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on June 9. The 28-year-old will report to Triple-A Salt Lake, a level where he has a 4.08 ERA and 1.32 WHIP across 46.1 innings this season.
