Pham (hip) characterized his early exit from Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers as a precautionary move, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. "In the season, I'd play through it," Pham said of his tight left hip. "In the season, I don't miss any time with this. It's just because it's second week of March, spring training. You don't have to push it."
While Pham's comments offer hope that his hip injury is only a minor concern, he may be withheld from the lineup for a few days until he returns to full health. Pham went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a strikeout prior to departing Sunday's contest.

It's a good landing spot for Pham, who could get regular reps in right field, assuming the plan is for Andrew McCutchen to be a full-time designated hitter. Pham, who turns 37 in March, slashed .248/.305/.368 with nine home runs and seven stolen bases over 116 regular-season contests between the White Sox, Cardinals and Royals last season.

The Royals clinched a playoff berth Friday, so the team will sit many of their usual starters Saturday -- including Pham. His absence will put Salvador Perez into the DH role while Freddy Fermin catches for Seth Lugo.
Pham is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Giants.
It'll be Pham's first off day in September, snapping a streak of 17 consecutive starts. During that span, the outfielder has split time between DH (four games), left field (six games) and right field (seven games). MJ Melendez, Kyle Isbel and Adam Frazier fill the outfield from left to right Saturday while Yuli Gurriel slots in at DH.
Pham went 3-for-4 with a walk in Wednesday's 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Yankees.
Pham's bat has been hot in September -- he's gone 13-for-41 (.317) over 10 contests this month. He has five multi-hit efforts in that span, and his ability to get on base at a high rate has helped him take over as the Royals' leadoff hitter. Between three teams this season, the veteran outfielder has a .261/.325/.392 slash line with nine home runs, seven stolen bases, 36 RBI and 45 runs scored over 418 plate appearances.
