  • Jonathan Schoop: Signs with Mexican League team

Schoop agreed to a contract Friday with Algodoneros de Union Laguna of the Mexican League, BeisbolPuro.com reports. Schoop never caught on with another team last season after being released by the Tigers in July, though he did recently participate in the Caribbean Series. He's still just 32 years old, but Schoop hasn't gotten a sniff from big-league clubs after putting up a lowly .559 OPS from 2022 through 2023.

  • Jonathan Schoop: Hits free agency

The Tigers released Schoop on Wednesday. After being designated for assignment by Detroit on Friday and clearing waivers, Schoop will now look to latch on with another club. The 31-year-old hasn't lived up to his $7.5 million salary, slashing just .213/.278/.272 on the season. Schoop should at least be able to land a minor-league deal elsewhere, but his days of being a meaningful fantasy contributor are seemingly behind him.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: Designated for assignment

Schoop was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Friday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Schoop has lost his 40-man roster spot halfway into the final year of a two-year, $15 million agreement with Detroit. He had slashed just .213/.278/.272 with zero home runs through 55 games (151 plate appearances) this season after also struggling badly at the plate in 2022. The 31-year-old infielder seems likely to pass through waivers unclaimed given that he's still owed about $3.5 million.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: Heads to bench Sunday

Schoop is out of the lineup for Sunday's game at Colorado, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Pressreports. Schoop went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run Saturday, which was just his third multi-hit effort through 52 games this year. He came into Sunday with four starts in six games at third base since the demotion of Nick Maton last weekend, but Tyler Nevin will start at the hot corner in the series finale against the Rockies.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: Records rare two-hit game

Schoop went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's extra-inning win over the Rockies. Schoop started at third base and tallied his first two-hit effort since May 27. Since then, the veteran has hit just .170 across 21 games, and he's batting .209 for the season. Schoop may continue to see starts at the hot corner, but he hasn't been a fantasy contributor to this point, and the Tigers could always decide to give younger players a look there as the season progresses.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: Not starting Friday

Schoop isn't in the Tigers' lineup Friday against the Rockies. Even with lefty Austin Gomber on the mound for Colorado, the right-handed Schoop will remain in the dugout Friday amid his offensive woes -- he's slashing just .171/.222/.195 over 45 plate appearances in June. Andy Ibanez will shift over to the hot corner and bat third.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: Sitting Wednesday vs. TEX

Schoop is not in the starting lineup versus the Rangers on Wednesday. Schoop has struggled throughout the 2023 campaign, and in the month of June the veteran infielder has hit just .171/.231/.200 over 35 at-bats while picking up just one extra-base hit. Zack Short will play third base with Schoop out of the lineup.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: Double, two runs in win

Schoop went 2-for-4 with one double and two runs scored in Saturday's 7-3 victory over the White Sox. Schoop was in the starting lineup for the first time in three games and delivered his second multi-hit game of the season, launching a double in the eighth inning after a single in his first at-bat. With the emergence of Zach McKinstry, Schoop has been relegated to part-time duties for the Tigers. The 31-year-old has driven in just two runs this season.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: Enters Sunday lineup

Schoop is starting at second base and batting eighth in Sunday's game against the Cardinals. Schoop has become a part-time player with Zach McKinstry emerging as the top option at second base. The veteran is still searching for his first home run, and he's slashing just .204/.271/.259. Fantasy managers can turn their attention elsewhere moving forward unless Schoop is able to earn more playing time at some point and also looks better at the plate.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: Not starting Sunday

Schoop is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's tilt against the Giants. Schoop is out of the lineup for a second consecutive game after going 0-for-3 during Friday's extra-innings loss to the Giants. Zach McKinstry is hitting eighth and playing second base for the series finale.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: Sitting out Wednesday

Schoop is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Blue Jays. Nick Maton is at second base and batting second with tough right-hander Kevin Gausman on the mound for Toronto. Ryan Kreidler will play third base and hit ninth. Schoop is batting .188 with a .503 OPS and no extra-base hits through six games this season for Detroit.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: May sit against most righties

Schoop will start against lefties this season but is only expected to start "sporadically" against righties according to manager A.J. Hinch, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Schoop's day off in the second game of the season Saturday against Zach Eflin and the Rays looks like it may be significant. If Schoop ends up merely filling the small side of a platoon at the keystone, Zach McKinstry would stand to benefit.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: Heads to bench

Schoop is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Rays. Schoop started against lefty Shane McClanahan on Opening Day, going 0-for-2 with a walk and two strikeouts. With righty Zach Eflin on the mound for the second game of the year, Zach McKinstry takes over at the keystone. It's possible that implies Schoop could be stuck on the short side of a platoon this season -- arguably a deserved outcome for a player who hit .202/.239/.322 last year -- but it may simply be the case that the Tigers want to make sure everybody gets some at-bats in the first few games.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: Slims down in offseason

Schoop lost weight in the offseason and feels healthier heading into the 2023 season, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Schoop played at 247 pounds last year, and while he didn't say where he was at to begin camp, he is noticeably lighter. The veteran hopes that helps with his production, as he posted a career-worst .561 OPS across 131 games in 2022. Schoop will likely be the team's primary second baseman to begin the year, though he can also play some at first. He will look to rebound to his 2021 form, when he blasted 22 home runs and posted a .755 OPS.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: Plans to return to Detroit

Schoop doesn't intend to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract ahead of next week's deadline, Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press reports. Schoop inked a two-year, $15 million contract extension with the Tigers last August, so he would be forgoing a $7.5 million salary for 2023 if he choses to opt out of his contract. After submitting a career-worst .561 OPS over 510 plate appearances in 2022, the 31-year-old was unlikely to approach that $7.5 million salary figure in free agency. Schoop will likely have to compete for a regular role during spring training.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: Gets afternoon off

Schoop will sit for the first half of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mariners. Schoop owns a .674 OPS in 14 games since his return from an ankle injury, though that's actually been enough to raise his season-long OPS, which now sits at .566. Harold Castro will get the start at second base.

Schoop isn't in the lineup Saturday against the White Sox. Schoop went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Friday's series opener against the White Sox but will retreat to the bench for the third time in the last four games. Harold Castro is starting at the keystone and batting third.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: Idle for second straight game

Schoop is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles. Schoop is on the bench for the second straight contest and the third time in four contests. With the season winding down and Schoop having recently returned from a stint on the injured list due to a right ankle sprain, the 30-year-old looks like he could handle more of a part-time role down the stretch.

  • Tigers' Jonathan Schoop: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Schoop is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Orioles. Schoop has gone just 3-for-21 (.143) in six games since returning from the injured list, so he will get a breather Tuesday. Harold Castro will man the keystone in Schoop's place.
