There were signs that George Springer was approaching a production cliff in his career, but nothing truly pointed to him having this type of falloff. Springer posted the worst batting average of his full-season career by nearly 40 points and failed to reach 20 homers in a full season for the first time since 2015 when he appeared in just 102 games. The walk rate and the contact rates remained constant, yet Springer's bat appeared at times as if it still had a weighted doughnut on it. Springer has made a career of feasting off fastballs, but hit just .241 against fastballs in 2024 and .192 against non-fastballs. He no longer has the juice to get into the elevate-and-celebrate crowd as his groundball to fly-ball ratio has dropped from 0.70 in 2021 to 1.54 this past season. His 50.7 percent groundball rate was the highest of his career, while his 39.8 percent pull percentage was a continuation of the 2023 struggles. His contract will guarantee him playing time in Toronto, but where that playing time comes in the lineup is anyone's guess. He no longer profiles as a top-of-the-lineup hitter, so his production could be further impacted hitting down in the lineup as Toronto either looks to make one final push in the Vlad era or begins a tear-down after multiple disappointing seasons. Springer is absolutely on his descent down the aging curve and appears to be in a rapidly accelerating phase at this time.

Springer is still batting just .114 (4-for-35) through 14 Grapefruit League appearances, but he has an 8:9 BB:K and might finally be getting his timing down with Opening Day less than a week away.     Springer says he feels good despite batting .107 (3-for-28) this spring with zero home runs, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. "I feel great, actually," Springer said. "For me, it's about the process. It's not about the results. I want to make sure that I'm swinging at the right pitches and getting my swing off. Yeah, obviously everyone would like to see the ball hit the grass, but for me specifically, I'm working on the mechanical side of it." While the 35-year-old isn't concerned about his lack of results in camp, fantasy investors likely are. Springer's .674 OPS and 50.7 percent groundball rate last season were career worsts, and it wasn't due to simple bad luck as his average exit velocity, max exit velocity and bat speed all showed declines. If he can't turn things around quickly to begin the regular season, the Blue Jays will have to give serious thought to handing some of his playing time to younger options, such as prospect Alan Roden.

    Blue Jays manager John Schneider indicated Thursday that Springer might not be his leadoff hitter in 2025, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports. The overwhelming majority of Springer's starts since joining the Blue Jays have come from the leadoff spot and Schneider didn't dismiss using the outfielder there again this season, but he's also considering Bo Bichette for the top of the batting order, "depending on who we're facing." Vladimir Guerrero and Anthony Santander are slated to hit second and third, respectively, while Schneider mentioned leadoff and cleanup as options for Bichette. It's possible Springer will be used in whichever of those two spots Bichette doesn't occupy.

Springer has played just three innings in left field at the major-league level and those came back in 2018.
