Giants' Adrian Houser: Shut down with forearm strain

The Giants placed Houser on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to a right forearm strain.
Houser will likely be sent in for an MRI before the Giants have a better sense of a timeline for his return, but he's a good bet to spend more than the minimum 15 days on the shelf and could be at risk of missing the rest of the season. The right-hander sustained the injury in his start against the Reds on Tuesday, when he was lifted midway through the second inning after feeling tightness in his arm. Houser had been pitching exceptionally well since the All-Star break, logging a 1.52 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 20:7 K:BB in 29.2 innings between two starts and six relief appearances. The loss of Houser creates another hole in a patchwork Giants rotation that has been thinned out over the past few weeks after Tyler Mahle and Robbie Ray were moved at the trade deadline and after Trevor McDonald (elbow) and Carson Whisenhunt (elbow) both recently suffered season-ending injuries.

Houser entered the game in the third inning and kept the Guardians in check for five frames despite throwing 48 of 80 pitches for strikes with only four whiffs. Houser will essentially be making a second straight turn through the rotation, after he worked behind an opener and picked up a win while throwing five innings of one-run ball in bulk relief Friday against the Tigers. Trevor McDonald's season-ending elbow injury as well as the recent trades of Robbie Ray and Tyler Mahle should keep a rotation spot available for Houser over the balance of the season if he's able to perform well enough to maintain it. Over 23 appearances (14 starts) with the Giants, Houser owns a 4.55 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 65:31 K:BB across 97 innings.

Houser allowed two earned runs on five hits, including a home run, and one walk while striking out one in 5.1 relief innings during Tuesday's 8-2 loss to Arizona.
Landen Roupp surrendered six earned runs in just 2.2 innings, opening the door for Houser to cover the rest of the game. The 33-year-old right-hander was moved to the bullpen after drawing his last start June 16. He's made two relief appearances since then, allowing two earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out two in 7.2 innings. Overall, he owns a 5.38 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 50:26 K:BB in 73.2 innings this season.
Giants manager Tony Vitello said Saturday that Houser will pitch out of the bullpen going forward, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Houser will exit the rotation after putting up a 7.00 ERA and 1.83 WHIP over his last five starts and failing to complete five innings in any of them. He was limited to just one inning in his most recent start Tuesday in Atlanta, though that game ended up being suspended in the second inning due to inclement weather. Houser will cede his spot in the rotation to Tyler Mahle (hamstring), who is set to return from the injured list to start Wednesday versus the Athletics.

Houser has failed to complete five innings in each of his last four appearances, giving up 13 runs (12 earned) across 17 innings in that span. He's also posted a 20:5 K:BB during that stretch, which is a noticeable improvement in control despite the otherwise poor performances. Overall, the veteran right-hander has a 5.54 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 46:24 K:BB through 65 innings across 13 starts. He'll be tough to trust in fantasy until further notice. Houser bookended his outing poorly, giving up one earned run in the first and fifth frames before his day ended, but a fifth-inning Willy Adames throwing error at least kept one earned run off the hurler's ledger. The 33-year-old right-hander hasn't been all that effective at missing bats in 2026, fanning fewer than six in all 12 of his starts, and he also remains without a scoreless appearance. Houser will take a rough 5.49 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 40:24 K:BB over 60.2 innings into his next scheduled appearance against an upstart Nationals lineup.
