Ray (2-2) took the loss Tuesday, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks over five innings as the Giants fell 2-1 to the Reds. He struck out six.
The southpaw tossed only 52 of 94 pitches for strikes, but it was his command and not his control that ended up costing him -- both Cincy runs came on solo shots by Spencer Steer in the third inning and Sal Stewart in the fourth, when Ray's pitches caught too much of the plate. He has yet to give up more than two runs in a start this season, posting a 2.42 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 24:10 K:BB through 22.1 innings, and Ray will look for more run support in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road this weekend against the Nationals.

Ray gave up a run in each of the first and second frames, but he settled down from there and ended his outing by retiring seven of the final eight batters he faced. The left-hander wasn't all that efficient -- he needed 96 pitches to complete 5.1 innings -- but looked dominant at times, racking up a hefty 19 swings-and-misses and seven punchouts. Ray has been solid to begin the campaign, allowing four runs while posting an 11:3 K:BB over his first 10.2 innings across two starts.

Ray (0-1) took the loss against the Yankees on Friday, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four across 5.1 innings. He did not issue a walk.
It was relatively smooth sailing through the first five innings of Ray's start Friday. That quickly changed in the sixth, when he yielded a two-run homer to Aaron Judge, and Ray ended up taking the loss after receiving zero run support from the Giants. It was still an encouraging performance out of the veteran southpaw, especially with the way he ended the 2025 regular season (8.33 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 27.2 innings across his final six starts of the year). Ray is projected to make his next start during the Giants' four-game home series against the Mets that kicks off Thursday.

Ray earned his first win in his fifth Cactus League start, tossing 39 of his 64 pitches for strikes while cruising through five perfect innings. The veteran southpaw has allowed two runs on four hits and eight walks while striking out 15 across 14.2 innings this spring as he gears up for his 13th big-league campaign. Ray logged 32 starts last season, finishing with a 3.65 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 9.2 K/9 across 182.1 innings, though he struggled with control, posting a 3.6 BB/9.
