Twins' Byron Buxton: Not starting in series opener
Buxton (hip) is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Astros.
Buxton will be relegated to the bench for a fifth straight game while he continues to recover from a sore right hip flexor. On a positive note, the Twins remain optimistic that Buxton will avoid a trip to the injured list, with manager Derek Shelton telling Dan Hayes of The Athletic that the veteran outfielder is "very close" to returning to the lineup. James Outman will cover center field in Buxton's stead Monday.

Twins' Byron Buxton: Expecting to avoid IL stint
Twins manager Derek Shelton suggested that Buxton (hip) is likely to avoid the injured list and return to the lineup soon after the outfielder worked out on the field prior to the Twins' games Saturday and Sunday against the Brewers, Matthew Leach of MLB.com reports. "The fact that he's out there moving around, I think we're trending in the right direction," Shelton said of Buxton. "And then we'll have a better idea [about Buxton's potential return] after he gets out and moves around."
Buxton hasn't played since Wednesday while he contends with right hip flexor soreness, but he appears to be confident that he'll return to the lineup in a matter of days. The outfielder will presumably go through another pregame workout Monday, after which the Twins will decide if he's fit to return to the lineup for the series opener versus the Astros. While Buxton has been on the bench the past four games, Ryan Kreidler and James Outman have shared center field, and right fielder Austin Martin has been elevated to the leadoff spot.

It's the fourth straight contest on the bench for Buxton as he continues to manage a hip injury. It's not clear how seriously the Twins have considered placing the outfielder on the injured list, but that possibility grows more likely with each additional game he misses. Over his last 26 games (114 at-bats), the star outfielder is batting .298 with 15 long balls, four doubles, 22 RBI and four stolen bases to raise his OPS for the year to .899.

Buxton went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and an RBI double in Saturday's 2-1 extra-innings win over the Guardians.
The center fielder's incredible power surge continued, and he even accounted for Minnesota's entire output in both hits and runs Saturday. Buxton opened the game with a first-inning homer and then delivered an RBI double in the 11th inning. Over his last 23 games (103 at-bats), he is batting .301 with 13 homers, four doubles, 20 RBI and 20 runs scored. He's also hit safely in 19 contests during that stretch.
