  • Diamondbacks' Mauricio Cabrera: Signs minors deal with Diamondbacks

Cabrera signed with the Diamondbacks as a non-roster invitee Tuesday. Cabrera recorded a strong 2.82 ERA in his 38.1-inning debut back in 2016 but hasn't been seen in the majors since, due to a combination of elbow issues and poor performance. In 48.0 innings for Double-A Birmingham in the White Sox's system last year, he recorded a 4.50 ERA and a very poor 19.1 percent walk rate.

  • Mauricio Cabrera: Released by Atlanta

Cabrera was cut loose by the Braves on Wednesday, David O'Brien of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Cabrera hadn't appeared in a major-league game since 2016, when he tossed 38.1 innings with the Braves. Over 31 appearances with High-A Florida this season, he had logged a disastrous 11.03 ERA and 2.71 WHIP over 31 innings of relief. He will look to latch on with another organization, though it's unlikely that we will see Cabrera back on a big-league mound in 2018.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Outrighted to Triple-A

Cabrera was sent to Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday after clearing waivers. Cabrera was removed from the 40-man roster to make room for new signee Peter Moylan. The 24-year-old flamethrower struggled to a 6.49 ERA in 43 innings split between the three highest levels of the minors last year, walking more batters (45) than he struck out (38). His triple-digit fastball could eventually be a major-league weapon, but he'll need to have some idea where it's going in order to win a roster spot.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Designated for assignment Monday

Cabrera was designated for assignment by the Braves on Monday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. To make room for the newly-acquired Peter Moylan, Atlanta opted to designate Cabrera for assignment. Cabrera had a rough showing at Triple-A Gwinnett in 2017, where he spent the bulk of last season. Over 24 games (26.1 innings) he posted a 7.86 ERA and 1.94 WHIP.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Activated, sent to Triple-A

Cabrera (elbow) was activated from the disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett, MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports. Cabrera has the tools to pitch in high-leverage situations one day, but he needs to work on his command, which was an issue even before the ailment. Until he can tune up his control, the hard-throwing right-hander will remain in the minors.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Struggling with control in rehab outings

Cabrera (elbow) completed a scoreless inning for Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday, but threw just six of his 17 pitches for strikes, MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports. He has thrown 24 of his 51 pitches for strikes during his rehab assignment, but has not allowed a run while striking out four over four innings. Cabrera is a decent long-term saves play in dynasty leagues, but he will likely be behind at least Jim Johnson and Arodys Vizcaino in the pecking order when he gets activated this season.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Rehab assignment set

Cabrera is set to begin his minor-league rehab assignment with High-A Florida on Friday, Kevin McAlpin of 680 The Fan reports. Cabrera will throw one inning Friday and hopefully toss two more in his next outing barring any setbacks. If all goes well in Florida, the 23-year-old will then head to Triple-A Gwinnett where he'll get his footing before returning to the Braves' bullpen.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Cleared for extended spring outing

Cabrera (elbow) will pitch in an extended spring training game Friday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. By completing a live batting practice session Tuesday, Cabrera cleared one of the last major hurdles on his road back to active competition. The Braves will keep him in a controlled environment Friday but it sounds like Cabrera could join Triple-A Gwinnett as soon as next week. While Cabrera throws gas and could end up being a closer in the future, he will need to prove his health and rein in his control for that to come to fruition.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Scheduled for bullpen session Wednesday

Cabrera (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Cabrera was originally scheduled to throw his first bullpen session during his DL stint on Monday, but that date has been bumped back to Wednesday. The reliever has felt good during his flat-ground throwing sessions and it sounds like he'll be back prior to the end of April.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: To throw bullpen session Monday

Cabrera (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Monday and likely won't need a long rehab stint, 680 The Fan's Kevin McAlpin reports. He has played catch twice without issue and it sounds like a rehab assignment could be right around the corner. If everything goes as planned, he should be back pitching in the later innings out of the Braves' bullpen before the end of April. If Jim Johnson struggles or gets traded at some point this season, Cabrera would be a logical choice to get some high-leverage work.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Lands on DL, as expected

Cabrera has been placed on the 10-day DL retroactive to March 30, MLB.com reports. Cabrera has dealt with elbow soreness throughout the spring, but the team is optimistic that there isn't any serious damage. The hard-throwing right-hander will be eligible to return just after a week into the season, though it's unlikely he returns as soon as he's eligible, as Cabrera has yet to resume throwing. Once the 23-year-old is ready to return to the Atlanta bullpen, there's no doubt he'll be a valuable asset, as he offers a fastball that consistently touches 100 MPH.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Lands on DL

Cabrera (elbow) will open the season on the disabled list, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. As was expected, Cabrera will begin the season on the DL after experiencing some elbow soreness earlier in camp. The Braves don't appear worried about the issue, as there has been no indication of structural damage; rather, the team will take things slow with the 23-year-old, who appears to simply need more rest.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Likely to begin season on DL

Cabrera (elbow) is still at least a few days away from finding out when he'll be able to throw again, and a DL stint to begin the season appears likely, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. The 23-year-old said Saturday the discomfort in his elbow has subsided over the last few days, but the Braves have no reason to rush Cabrera back into action. His status for the regular season should become clearer once the team determines when he's able to resume throwing.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Won't throw for few days

Cabrera (elbow) will refrain from throwing for a few days, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. The news further indicates the likelihood that Cabrera begins the season on the DL. The right-hander is coming off a stellar rookie season in which he posted a 2.82 ERA over 41 games and quickly established himself as a nice reliever in the Braves' bullpen. Unfortunately, it appears his 2017 campaign will be temporarily sidelined until he returns to full health.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Has elbow soreness, DL possible

Cabrera is suffering from elbow soreness and could need a stint on the disabled list to start the season, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Atlanta will back off using Cabrera for a few days to assess the extent of his injury. It's bad timing for the high-leverage, high-velocity reliever, who could find himself in the running for saves later in the year if this turns out to be a minor setback.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Battles control again Monday

Cabrera gave up two runs on one hit, two walks and a hit batter over 0.2 innings during Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. He struck out one. It's the second time in a week that Cabrera's control has deserted him, not an encouraging sign with Opening Day getting closer. The 23-year-old's 100 mph fastball has made him a popular spec saves play this preseason but after posting a 4.5 BB/9 last year in his big league debut, Cabrera will need to learn to harness his heat before he'll be a truly reliable bullpen arm in any role.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Already hitting triple digits

Cabrera threw a shutout inning in Saturday's Grapefruit League opener against the Blue Jays, allowing one hit and one walk, and the stadium radar gun recording him hitting 100 mph with his fastball on four separate pitches, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Stadium guns can be a little generous, but that's still ridiculous velocity for the last week of February. Cabrera will fill a setup role for the Braves this season behind closer Jim Johnson, and attempt to get his results to match the raw stuff he brings to the mound after he managed just a 7.5 K/9 in 38.1 major league innings last year.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Will fill setup role

Cabrera will set up Jim Johnson to begin 2017, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Braves manager Brian Snitker squashed any thought of a spring competition for the ninth-inning role Friday, naming Johnson as his closer and saying Cabrera would join Arodys Vizcaino (shoulder) as his primary setup men. Cabrera's triple-digit heat didn't translate into big strikeout numbers last season in the majors, but he should still be a solid source of holds this year, and could work his way into some saves if Johnson falters or gets dealt.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Should fill late-inning role in 2017

Cabrera will head into spring training expected to be a key part of the Braves' bullpen in 2017. Jim Johnson is still around and seems likely to begin the season as the closer, but Cabrera and his triple-digit fastball will be ready to step in if Johnson is unable to repeat his 2016 career revival. Despite his overpowering heat, Cabrera's lack of control or a dependable off-speed pitch have kept him from posting big strikeout numbers, but the 23-year-old still has time to refine his arsenal. Fantasy players who don't like to spend big on saves may want to make Cabrera a priority target in the endgame of their auction or late rounds of their draft.

  • Braves' Mauricio Cabrera: Perfect in ninth against Phillies

Cabrera notched his fourth save with a perfect ninth inning in Saturday's 8-4 victory over the Phillies. He disposed of the Phillies in 12 pitches, and has now successfully converted all four save opportunities. Cabrera has been stellar in any role he's been asked to take on this season, as he's also amassed seven holds and notched three victories. He figures to continue sharing occasional save chances with Jim Johnson, while also fulfilling the role of set-up man when needed.
