Top Ty Kelly News

  • Dodgers' Ty Kelly: Links up with Dodgers

Kelly announced Sunday via his personal Twitter account that he signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers.

After briefly retiring in 2019, Kelly elected to resume his career in 2021 in independent ball. He eventually caught on with the Mariners on a minor-league deal, appearing in 22 games last season for the organization's Triple-A affiliate and posting a .670 OPS over 90 plate appearances. Kelly will presumably report to Triple-A Oklahoma City with his new organization once the minor-league season gets underway.

  • Mariners' Ty Kelly: Joins Mariners organization

The Mariners purchased Kelly's contract from the Long Island Ducks on Saturday, Michael Pfaff of the Long Island Ducks reports.

Kelly had been under contract in the independent Atlantic League, but now joins the Seattle organization. The 32-year-old has appeared in 118 major-league games with the Mets and Phillies, all of which came between 2016 and 2018.

  • Ty Kelly: Heads to indy ball

Kelly came out of retirement to sign with the Kansas City Monarchs of the independent American Association on Saturday, Brandon Warne of Access Twins reports.

Kelly announced his retirement back in 2019, but it appears he's not quite done with the sport after all. Whether or not this is the start of an attempt to return to the MLB level remains to be seen, but as a 32-year-old with a career .203/.288/.323 slash line in 188 plate appearances at the highest level, it would be a surprise to see him have much of an impact down the line.

  • Ty Kelly: Ends playing days

Kelly announced Sunday via his personal Twitter account that he has elected to retire from professional baseball.

The 31-year-old utility man had spent the 2019 campaign in the Angels organization, appearing exclusively at Triple-A Salt Lake and batting .246 with one home run and three steals. Kelly had previously logged time in the big leagues with the Mets and Phillies between 2016 and 2018, slashing .203/.288/.323 in 188 plate appearances spanning 118 games.

  • Angels' Ty Kelly: Joins Angels

Kelly signed a minor-league contract with the Angels on Tuesday, Robert Murray of The Athletic reports.

Per Murray, Kelly's deal doesn't include an invitation to major-league spring training, so the veteran utility man won't be given the opportunity to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster. Instead, Kelly will likely begin the campaign at Triple-A Salt Lake after slashing .259/.348/.416 with eight home runs in 2018 with the Mets' Pacific Coast League affiliate in Las Vegas.

  • Mets' Ty Kelly: Called back to big leagues

Kelly was called up to the Mets on Monday.

  • Mets' Ty Kelly: Optioned back to minors

Kelly was sent down to Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Kelly only spent a couple days with the team after being recalled from the minors Tuesday, and he didn't wind up seeing any game action while with the Mets on this brief stay in the big leagues. The utility man was cast off the active roster in order to make room for Wilmer Flores (back), who was reinstated from the 10-day DL in a corresponding move.

  • Mets' Ty Kelly: Returns to big club

The Mets purchased Kelly's contract from Triple-A Las Vegas ahead of Tuesday's game against the Braves, MLB.com reports.

Kelly didn't appear in Tuesday's contest and remains out of the lineup for the series finale Wednesday. The 29-year-old switch hitter is expected to serve in a utility role during his time with the Mets and doesn't project to receive many at-bats.

  • Mets' Ty Kelly: Slated for promotion

Kelly's contract will be purchased from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Kelly will head to the big leagues after batting .263 with 20 extra-base hits and 27 RBI over 59 games at Triple-A this season. He spent 70 games in the majors between the Phillies and the Mets in 2017.

  • Mets' Ty Kelly: Reassigned to minors camp

The Mets reassigned Kelly to their minor-league camp Tuesday.

Kelly amassed 105 plate appearances with the Mets and Phillies last season, but with Wilmer Flores and Jose Reyes earmarked for utility infield roles, the 29-year-old was a long shot to crack the Opening Day roster. He'll instead serve as organizational depth at Triple-A Las Vegas to open the 2018 season.

  • Mets' Ty Kelly: Agrees to minor-league deal with Mets

Kelly agreed to a minor-league contract with the Mets, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.

After splitting time with the Phillies and Mets in 2017, Kelly will return to New York for the upcoming season. His ability to play both the infield and outfield is valuable to the club, but he offers little fantasy value coming off a 2017 season in which he hit .191/.257/.337 over 70 games.

  • Ty Kelly: Becomes free agent

Kelly cleared waivers Wednesday and is now a free agent, Matt Gelb of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Kelly offers versatility on defense, as he spent time at second and third base as well as each spot in the outfield this season. However, he doesn't carry much fantasy value on offense. Kelly owns a .211/.297/.340 line for his career and hit just .191 with a .595 OPS over 70 games with the Mets and Phillies this season.

  • Phillies' Ty Kelly: Makes rare appearance in box score Saturday

  • Phillies' Ty Kelly: Hits pinch-hit grand slam

Kelly hit a pinch-hit grand slam in Saturday's win over the Giants.

You never know what you'll see on a given night in baseball. Kelly had just two homers in 91 career major-league games coming into Saturday and 45 homers in nine seasons in the minors. The 29-year-old has not started a game for the Phillies since his most recent promotion on Aug. 11.

  • Phillies' Ty Kelly: Returning to majors

Kelly has been promoted to the big-league roster, Ryan Lawrence of PhillyVoice.com reports.

Kelly returns to the big leagues after being shipped to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Aug. 4, making it a short stint in the minors. It was expected for Kelly to return to the Phillies when the rosters expanded in September, so the call up now doesn't come as a huge surprise. In 48 games with the Phillies, Kelly is hitting .186 with one home run and 10 runs batted in.

  • Phillies' Ty Kelly: Heads to Lehigh Valley

Kelly was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday.

Kelly had been squeezed out of regular playing time back in mid-July, and now that an extra catcher was needed on the active roster with Andrew Knapp (hand) sidelined temporarily, Kelly wound up being the odd man out. The utility man hasn't performed well at the plate this season, but he'll likely be back in the big leagues once rosters expand in September at the latest.

  • Phillies' Ty Kelly: Likely to head back to bench role

Kelly is out of the lineup Monday against the Marlins.

With Cesar Hernandez (oblique) returning from the 10-day disabled list Monday and immediately reclaiming the starting second base gig, Kelly's run of regular playing time looks to be over. Kelly wasn't able to do much with the everyday at-bats, going just 4-for-31 at the plate since June 25. He's now expected to act as the Phillies' top utility infielder.

  • Phillies' Ty Kelly: Day off Thursday

Kelly is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Pirates, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.

Kelly will sit for the second consecutive game, although the 28-year-old did serve as a pinch hitter during Wednesday's affair, striking out in his lone at-bat. For Thursday's contest, Andres Blanco draws the start at second base while batting eighth in the order.

  • Phillies' Ty Kelly: Takes seat Wednesday

Kelly is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Pirates, Stephen Gross of The Allentown Morning Call reports.

Kelly is still expected to serve as the primary second baseman while Howie Kendrick (hamstring) is sidelined, although the 28-year-old has just three hits to his name in the past 14 games. As a result, he'll head to the bench for the second time in three games, allowing Andres Blanco to log a start at the keystone.
