Nola signed a minor-league deal Sunday that includes an invitation to spring training with the Rockies, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Nola was in the Royals' organization in 2024 and spent about a week in the majors without appearing in a game. With Drew Romo and Jacob Stallings in the mix, it's unlikely that Nola will play a significant role for the Rockies in 2025.

The Royals designated Nola for assignment Saturday, Jaylon T. Thompson of The Kansas City Star reports.
Kansas City acquired outfielders Tommy Pham and Robbie Grossman via waivers, and Nola was one of the 40-man casualties along with infielder CJ Alexander. Nola surprised many with his initial success with the Mariners in 2019, but he's struggled to carve out consistent playing time in the majors in the season since. The 34-year-old has posted an ugly .158/.247/.301 line in 46 games with Triple-A Omaha in 2024.

He was released as a result but quickly found a new deal with the Royals, where he's likely to compete for the backup catcher role with Freddy Fermin (finger). Across 154 plate appearances with the Padres in 2023, Nola posted a .146/.260/.192 line.

Padres' Austin Nola: Back on bench
Nola will be on the bench for Saturday's game against the Yankees, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Nola's playing time has slipped recently, particularly against right-handers. He remains the primary catcher against lefties, but it's been Brett Sullivan behind the plate against four of the last five righties, including Saturday's starter Luis Severino. Nola is hitting .135/.259/.188 on the year, so he's not making much of a case to expand his role.

Brett Sullivan will make a second straight start at catcher and could continue to get regular looks versus right-handed pitching opponents, though neither backstop has been particularly productive with the bat this year. It's a situation to avoid in standard fantasy leagues.
