Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Catches on with Arizona
Alcantara signed a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks on Aug. 1 and has gone 2-for-18 with a home run, three walks, four runs and four RBI in five games for Triple-A Reno.
After parting ways with the Cubs in late July, Alcantara has begun his fourth stint in the Diamondbacks organization. He signed with Arizona as an international free agent in 2012, but he was later traded to the Tigers in 2017 before catching back on with Arizona via two separate waiver claims during the 2022 season. The 27-year-old infielder has spent parts of three seasons in the majors but has played exclusively at the Triple-A level in 2023, slashing .258/.353/.408 with seven home runs in 69 games between the Cubs' and Diamondbacks' top affiliates.

Cubs' Sergio Alcantara: Reassigned to minor-league camp
Alcantara was reassigned Thursday to the minor-league side of Cubs camp, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Alcantara was sporting a cool .818 OPS through 22 plate appearances this spring in the Cactus League, but he's left without an Opening Day roster spot since the Cubs' offseason additions all made it through camp unscathed.

Cubs' Sergio Alcantara: Drives in three, steals base
Alcantara went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and three RBI in Tuesday's Cactus League game against the Rangers. He also stole his first base of the spring.
Alcantara had a nice game as he competes for a bench role with the Cubs. The 26-year-old joined Chicago on a minor-league deal in December, so he's likely ticketed for Triple-A Iowa with the likes of Dansby Swanson, Nico Hoerner and Nick Madrigal ahead of him as middle-infield options. Alcantara is organizational depth with limited fantasy appeal at the moment.

Cubs' Sergio Alcantara: Gets minors deal from Cubs
Alcantara signed a minor-league deal with the Cubs on Tuesday.
Splitting time between the D-backs and Padres in 2022, Alcantara slashed .220/.261/.356 over 224 plate appearances. He posted an .898 OPS during his last minor-league stint in 2021. Similar production and/or an injury in the Cubs' major-league infield could earn the 26-year-old another opportunity in the bigs this season

Alcantara was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
Alcantara played in 93 games between Arizona and San Diego last season and struggled at the plate with a .617 OPS. He was removed from the 40-man roster in order to free up space for prospects ahead of the Rule 5 draft.

Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Settling into regular role
Alcantara will start at third base and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Brewers.
With Ketel Marte landing on the injured list Friday, Alcantara looks poised to finish the season in a near-everyday role in the Arizona infield. Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Slugs walkoff homer
Alcantara hit a walkoff three-run home run in his only at-bat during Wednesday's 5-3 victory versus the Dodgers.
Alcantara didn't start the contest, but he was brought into the game as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning. He got a chance to make his mark at the plate against Los Angeles closer Craig Kimbrel with Arizona down by a run in a two-out, two-on situation in the bottom of the 10th frame. Alcantara came through with a blast to right field to give the Diamondbacks the win. It was his fifth homer of the campaign, tying his total from last season.

Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Hits fourth homer
Alcantara went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk in a 3-2 victory over the White Sox on Sunday.
Alcantara helped power his team to victory with a solo shot off Dylan Cease. It was one of only two hits that the Diamondbacks managed in eight innings against the right-hander. Alcantara now has four home runs and is slashing a paltry .211/.256/.340 in a backup role this year. He has never previously hit more than five home runs in a season.

Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Returns to bench role
Alcantara is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.
Alcantara finds himself as the odd man out of the starting nine with Ketel Marte (hamstring) returning from a six-game absence to serve as Arizona's designated hitter. While picking up starts at third base in each of the past three contests, Alcantara went 2-for-10 with two doubles, a walk, three runs and an RBI.

Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Loses playing time with Marte at 2B
Alcantara is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants.
Alcantara had picked up starts in the infield in three of the Diamondbacks' previous four games, but he's likely to fade into more of a part-time role now that Ketel Marte has been cleared to resume playing second base. The Diamondbacks still have a surplus of left-handed bats on the roster, so the switch-hitting Alcantara could maintain a regular spot in the lineup versus left-handed pitching.

Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Not in Saturday's lineup
Alcantara isn't starting Saturday's game against the Nationals.
Alcantara started Friday against Washington but went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. He'll take a seat since Ketel Marte is starting at second base while Jake McCarthy serves as the designated hitter Saturday.

Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Racks up three hits in loss
Alcantara went 3-for-4 with a double in Tuesday's 13-0 loss to the Giants.
The Diamondbacks weren't able to string many hits together, but Alcantara was a bright spot in a brutal loss. He's gone 6-for-12 (.500) with a home run, three RBI and a run scored in six games since rejoining Arizona off waivers from San Diego earlier in July. The infielder is slashing .200/.219/.310 with two homers, 13 RBI, 10 runs scored and three doubles through 107 plate appearances. He's seen an uptick in playing time at second base, but that may be short-lived as Ketel Marte is expected to play the field again soon.

Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Retreats to bench
Alcantara isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Giants.
Alcantara is out of the lineup for the third time in the last six games after he went 6-for-12 with a homer, a double, three RBI and two strikeouts over his last five matchups. Buddy Kennedy is starting at the keystone and batting sixth.

Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Pops homer in loss
Alcantara went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's 6-5 loss to the Rockies.
Alcantara hit a two-run blast in the second inning to give the Diamondbacks a 3-1 lead. This was his first hit in two contests since he rejoined Arizona after being waived by the Padres. He's posted a lackluster .163/.186/.272 slash line with two home runs, 12 RBI, 10 runs scored, two doubles and a triple through 99 plate appearances. Considering his homer Friday was his first hit since June 17, he shouldn't be expected to do much when he's in the lineup.
