• Phillies' Trea Turner: Could bat leadoff in 2025

  Manager Rob Thomson said last week that he's considering moving Kyle Schwarber down to third or fourth in the Phillies' everyday lineup this season, potentially clearing the way for Turner to serve as the club's primary leadoff hitter, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. In 2024, Schwarber started 149 of the Phillies' 162 games out of the leadoff spot, with Bryson Stott (10 starts) and Whit Merrifield (three) setting the table in the other 13 contests. Merrifield wasn't re-signed in free agency, and Stott doesn't appear to be an ideal candidate to slot in atop the lineup when the Phillies are at full strength since it would create an imbalance atop the batting order with three lefties (Stott, Schwarber and Bryce Harper) in the first four spots. With Thomson having acknowledged after the past season, during Winter Meetings and last week that he feels Schwarber's power production would be better served in the No. 3 or 4 spot behind Harper, Turner represents the most logical candidate to fill the void atop the lineup. Turner batted exclusively out of the two-hole in 2024, but he made 15 starts out of the leadoff spot during the 2023 campaign and saw plenty of usage atop the order during his stints with the Nationals and Dodgers earlier in his career. A move to the leadoff spot could open up increased running opportunities for Turner, whose 19 steals in 2024 were his fewest in a season since the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.

Turner had two of the five hits the Phillies managed in the game and swiped multiple bases for the second time in his last three contests. He has at least one hit in seven of his last eight games, posting a .343 average over that span. Turner is treading around the .300 mark for the season once again, slashing .298/.342/.465 with 19 homers, 59 RBI, 84 runs, 19 steals and a 27:94 BB:K in 514 plate appearances.

The 31-year-old shortstop pilfered his 16th and 17th bags in this contest, marking his second time notching two stolen bases in a game this season. Overall, it has been another solid year for the Philadelphia star when in the lineup, as he's hit .299 with 19 homers, 83 runs scored and 59 RBI across 113 games.

Turner jumped on a hanging sinker from Luis Severino in the top of the third and sent it into the stands in left-center field to tie the game at 2-2. It marked the shortstop's 19th home run on the campaign and his fourth in September, and he's slashing .290/.338/.507 with 10 RBI and 11 runs scored on the month. Turner has also hit safely in each of his last five games.

Turner put the Phillies ahead 4-2 with his first home run off Taj Bradley in the third inning before cranking another two-run shot off Edwin Uceta in the eighth to cap the Phillies' five-run frame. Turner had gone just 1-for-10 in his previous three games prior to Tuesday's three-hit, four-RBI performance. The shortstop is now slashing .299/.345/.474 across 467 plate appearances this season with 18 homers, 55 RBI, 78 runs scored and 15 stolen bases.

Turner was held in check for the remainder of the game and is now up to 14 steals for the year. It's been a rough stretch lately for Turner, who's still hitting .301 for the season but is slashing just .172/.209/.230 with a homer, five RBI, eight runs and a 4:17 BB:K over his last 20 games. He's driven in only two runs so far this month and has just two extra-base hits. For the year, the 31-year-old is slashing .301/.347/.468 with 13 homers, 39 RBI, 59 runs and an 18:66 BB:K in 352 plate appearances.

The hamstring injury that cost Turner six weeks earlier this season appears to have sapped his stolen base production -- the 31-year-old has just three steals since returning June 17. Even so, the shortstop has been on a tear in the month of July, batting .356 with 10 home runs, 22 RBI, 18 runs scored and three stolen bases in 18 games.
