• Braves' Grant Holmes: Struggles with control Saturday

Facing a mostly young split-squad Baltimore lineup that included Samuel Basallo and Dylan Beavers, Holmes built up to 58 pitches, but only 31 of them were strikes. The 29-year-old right-hander sports a 7:5 K:BB through 7.1 spring innings, and while he hasn't given up a run yet, Holmes' inability to find the strike zone consistently is a little worrying for an Atlanta rotation that can't afford any more attrition with Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow), Hurston Waldrep (elbow) and AJ Smith-Shawver (elbow) all set to miss significant time.

Facing a good chunk of Minnesota's likely Opening Day lineup, Holmes tossed just 23 of 46 pitches for strikes but escaped jams in the first and third innings. The 29-year-old right-hander worked a career-high 115 innings in 2025 before his season ended in July due to a partial UCL tear in his elbow, but so far in camp it looks like his decision to treat the issue with rest and rehab rather than surgery was the correct one. Through two Grapefruit League appearances, Holmes has thrown 4.2 scoreless frames with a 4:2 K:BB.

• Braves' Grant Holmes: Shifted to 60-day IL

  Atlanta transferred Holmes (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday. Earlier Sunday, Atlanta placed Holmes on the 15-day IL due to right elbow inflammation, but the club's decision to shift him to the 60-day IL suggests that follow-up tests may have revealed a more significant injury. As a result of the transaction, the earliest Holmes could return to action is Sept. 26, so his season his most likely over. The transaction will open up a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Erick Fedde, whom Atlanta acquired from St. Louis on Sunday and could immediately slot into the rotation. Over his 21 starts prior to landing on the IL, Holmes posted a 4-9 record, 3.99 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 123:54 K:BB in 115 innings.

His inability to complete more than four innings in his first two starts (he also has a one-inning relief appearance) isn't promising, but Holmes will likely stick in the rotation even when Spencer Strider (elbow) returns to the big-league club, given Reynaldo Lopez is set for an extended absence after undergoing shoulder surgery Tuesday.

  Holmes is seen as the early favorite to retain a spot in the rotation once Spencer Strider (elbow) is healthy, Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Holmes and Ian Anderson are both out of minor-league options and are expected to round out the Opening Day rotation behind Chris Sale, Reynaldo Lopez and Spencer Schwellenbach, but one of the duo will get bumped once Strider is cleared to make his return from an internal brace procedure on his elbow performed last April. General manager Alex Anthopoulos views Holmes as ahead of Anderson in that battle. "Look, I mention him -- because of the way he pitched last year for us and so on, he'd be the front-runner for that spot," Anthopoulos said Friday. "We think Grant's got significant upside. He's got a plus curveball, plus slider, throws strikes." On the other hand, Anthopoulos also suggested Holmes could move to the bullpen at some point, and Holmes has a lot more experience in that role -- 65 of his 68 appearances at Triple-A Gwinnett over the last two seasons have come in relief, while Anderson has been exclusively a starter throughout his career.
