  • Cardinals' Williams Perez: Heads to St. Louis on NRI deal

Perez signed a minor-league contract with the Cardinals on Monday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training. The 27-year-old wasn't able to find a landing spot until June, when the Mariners signed him to a minor-league deal. However, his patience paid off, as he produced a 2.28 ERA in 13 starts at Double-A Arkansas and a 3.15 ERA in four starts for Triple-A Tacoma. Perez has major-league experience as a starter, though with a crowded rotation battle on tap for spring training, his best bet to make the big-league team may be as a long reliever.

  • Mariners' Williams Perez: Gets minors deal from Seattle

Perez signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Tuesday, MLB.com reports. Immediately after signing with Seattle, Perez reported to Double-A Arkansas and started Tuesday's game, tossing five shutout innings and striking out six. The 27-year-old right-hander had planned to attend spring training with the Cubs, but was cut in February shortly before camp was scheduled to begin after being arrested for his involvement in a shooting in his native Venezuela. Perez never faced charges after the shooting was later deemed an accident, so he'll be able to resume his career without any legal matters lingering over him.

  • Williams Perez: Let go by Cubs

The Cubs released Perez on Sunday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports. Perez's dismissal comes a week after he was arrested in Venezuela following a fatal shooting accident. With the legal process still ongoing, it's uncertain when or if Perez will be allowed to resume his playing career. The 26-year-old spent the entire 2017 campaign at Triple-A Iowa in the Cubs' organization, finishing with a 5.01 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 120.1 innings.

Perez was arrested Saturday after an accidental shooting, Marcos Grunfeld reports. The accident occurred in Venezuela, and the 26-year-old pitcher is cooperating with police. Pitchers and catchers reports Feb. 13 for Chicago, so it's unclear if Perez will be in attendance Tuesday.

  • Cubs' Williams Perez: Re-ups with Cubs

Perez agreed to a minor-league deal with the Cubs on Thursday, which includes an invitation to spring training. Perez started 23 games for Triple-A Iowa last season, posting a 5.01 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 120.1 innings. Although he's appeared in 31 big-leagues games dating back to 2015, it seems likely that he will be back at the Triple-A level this spring. He will provide organizational depth with the ability to make a spot start or add to the bullpen.

Perez (elbow) gave up four runs in his first inning of work this spring, allowing three hits while walking one and striking out one. Perez has been out since last September recovering from an elbow impingement, and the 25-year-old struggled in his first appearance back. Perez was released by the Braves in advance of Thursday's Rule 5 Draft. Perez started 11 games for the Braves in 2016, finishing the year with a 6.04 ERA across 53.2 innings. The end of his season was characterized by injuries, however, as the 25-year-old sustained an elbow impingement not long after returning from the 60-day DL. As a result, he was deemed expendable by the Braves, giving the team a chance to add another player in the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday.

While Perez didn't walk anyone, he gave up a pair of big home runs in the third inning, one of which was a grand slam, to give the Nationals a 6-4 lead. The young right-hander's ERA ballooned to 5.47 with the poor start, his 10th of the season and 30th of his career. • Braves' Williams Perez: Activated from 60-day DL

Perez (shoulder) was activated from the 60-day DL on Friday, 680 The Fan's Kevin McAlpin reports. Perez has been sidelined since June 6 with a rotator cuff strain, and he returns just in time for roster expansion, so a corresponding move was not necessary.
