  • Stephen Tarpley: Released by Mets

The Mets released Tarpley on Friday.

The lefty had been designated for assignment Sunday and will become a free agent instead of joining Triple-A Syracuse. While Tarpley may appeal to an organization in need of pitching depth, he hasn't turned in a competent MLB season since 2018 and will need to prove he can still pitch at the highest level.

  • Mets' Stephen Tarpley: Designated for assignment

Tarpley was designated for assignment Sunday, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.

Tarpley appeared in one game with the big-league club this season, but he has spent the majority of his time at Triple-A Syracuse. There, he posted a 15.58 ERA and 3.17 WHIP across 8.2 innings. His removal from the 40-man roster created room for Jerad Eickhoff to have his contract selected.

  • Mets' Stephen Tarpley: Called up for twin bill

The Mets recalled Tarpley from Triple-A Syracuse ahead of Monday's doubleheader with Atlanta, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

New York is appointing Tarpley as its 27th man for the twin bill, so he'll presumably be optioned back to Syracuse following the second game of the doubleheader. Tarpley owns a 7.05 ERA across 44 career relief appearances with the Yankees, Marlins and Mets.

  • Mets' Stephen Tarpley: Returns from injured list

Tarpley returned from the COVID-19 injured list for Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday.

Tarpley had only been out since Wednesday, so it doesn't appear as though he tested positive for the virus himself. He's only made a single major-league appearance this season and has been off the big-league roster since late April.

Tarpley (undisclosed) was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

It's unclear how long Tarpley is expected to be sidelined since the reason for the move has not been reported. Tarpley has one appearance across two stints in the big leagues this season and is currently with Triple-A Syracuse.

  • Mets' Stephen Tarpley: Optioned to alternate site

Tarpley was optioned to the Mets' alternate site Sunday.

Tarpley has had a pair of brief stints on the big-league roster but has yet to record an out. Jose Peraza was recalled in a corresponding move.

Tarpley was called up by the Mets on Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Tarpley was up for one day in mid-April to serve as the extra man during a doubleheader but did not get into either game. He owns a career 6.65 ERA in 44.2 major-league innings, with his 13.6 percent walk rate more than offsetting his 27.2 percent strikeout rate. Joey Lucchesi was optioned in a corresponding move.

  • Mets' Stephen Tarpley: Optioned to Triple-A

Tarpley was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday.

Tarpley was claimed off waivers by the Mets after he was designated for assignment by Miami in January, but he was unable to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster. The left-hander posted a 5.68 ERA and 1.74 WHIP in 6.1 innings this spring.

  • Mets' Stephen Tarpley: Claimed by Mets

Tarpley was claimed off waivers by the Mets on Friday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Tarpley has received opportunities at the big-league level in each of the last three seasons but has generally failed to impress. In 44.2 total innings, he's struggled to a 6.65 ERA and 1.79 WHIP, with his 13.6 percent walk rate cancelling out his 27.2 percent strikeout rate. If he earns a roster spot with the Mets, it will likely be in a low-leverage role.
