  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Taking seat in Game 4

Sosa is not in the lineup Wednesday for Game 4 of the NLDS against the Mets, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Sosa often starts against left-handed pitching, as he did in Game 3 versus southpaw Sean Manaea. However, the Phillies are going with Bryson Stott at second base Wednesday versus lefty Jose Quintana.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Gets opportunity to start in Game 2

Sosa is batting eighth and starting at third base against the Mets in Game 2 of the NLDS on Sunday. Sosa didn't play in Game 1 of the series Saturday, but he'll move into the lineup for Game 2 while Alec Bohm begins on the bench. Per Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia, Phillies manager Rob Thomson referred to Sosa's energy in explaining the decision to make the switch. During the regular season, Sosa slashed .257/.313/.422 with seven home runs, 31 RBI, 39 runs and seven stolen bases over 272 plate appearances.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Returns from injured list

The Phillies reinstated Sosa (back) from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. The 28-year-old has been sidelined since Sept. 6 due to back spasms, and he'll rejoin the Phillies on Tuesday after a brief stay on the shelf. Alec Bohm (hand) also returned from the injured list over the weekend, so Sosa should reclaim his role as a utility infielder.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Starting assignment Saturday

Sosa (back) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Back spasms have kept Sosa on the injured list since Sunday, though he has already been cleared to participate in minor-league games. Assuming everything goes smoothly in Triple-A, it seems the 28-year-old has a good chance of returning to Philadelphia once eligible Tuesday.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Lands on injured list

The Phillies placed Sosa on the 10-day injured list Sunday due to back spasms. The 28-year-old had seen an uptick in playing time after Alec Bohm (hand) landed on the IL, but Sosa is now dealing with his own injury. It's unclear how long he's expected to be sidelined, but Sosa will be eligible to be reinstated Sept. 17.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Retreating to bench Wednesday

Sosa is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. Sosa entered the starting lineup in each of the previous four games while Alec Bohm (hand) was on the bench, going 3-for-12 with a home run, a double, two walks, three runs and three RBI. Though Bohm remains out of the lineup Wednesday, the Phillies will give Kody Clemens a look at third base while Sosa hits the bench. Bohm is considered day-to-day and is expected to avoid a stint on the injured list, so Sosa could be headed back to a utility role before long.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Steps up in win

Sosa went 2-for-2 with a solo home run, an RBI double and a walk in Saturday's 3-0 win over Atlanta. Sosa had gone 0-for-11 over the last six games before a big effort Saturday. He opened the scoring with his solo shot in the third inning and tacked on Philadelphia's last run in the seventh. The infielder has been a reliable depth option this year with a .269/.320/.448 slash line, seven homers, 29 RBI, 32 runs scored, 11 doubles, four triples and seven stolen bases over 241 plate appearances. Sosa has a short-term path to playing time while Alec Bohm sits with left hand soreness, but the former is likely to be limited to a short-side platoon role when the Phillies are at full health.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Homers late in win

Sosa went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, three RBI and a steal in Tuesday's win over the Dodgers. Sosa singled home two runs in the sixth and later added some more insurance with a solo home run in the ninth inning. The RBI were his first since July 12 and it was just his second multi-hit game since June 27. Sosa got some run as a starter when Trea Turner was injured earlier in the year, but Sosa's primarily operated as a bench bat. The 28-year-old is slashing .274/.329/.458 with six homers, 25 RBI, 29 runs, six steals and a 10:50 BB:K in 207 plate appearances this season.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Filling in for resting Turner

Sosa will start at shortstop and will bat sixth in Wednesday's game against the Yankees. Sosa will pick up just his fourth start since the All-Star break while he checks in for Trea Turner, who is getting rest for the day game after playing all 12 innings in the Phillies' 7-6 loss Tuesday night. While the Phillies have all their key position players at full strength, Sosa will continue to handle a utility role and won't benefit from consistent playing time.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Back in action Tuesday

Sosa (elbow) will start at second base and bat sixth in Tuesday's game in Detroit. Sosa had to depart a game over the weekend after being hit in the left elbow by a pitch, but he's ready to roll now. He and his teammates will be tasked in trying to solve Tarik Skubal on Tuesday.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Suffers left elbow bruise

Sosa was diagnosed with a left elbow contusion after being hit by a pitch in the fifth inning of Saturday's 12-1 win over the Diamondbacks, Brooke Destra of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. Though X-rays have cleared Sosa of a serious injury, he should be considered day-to-day heading into Sunday's series finale. He went 0-for-1 with a run scored prior to exiting.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Hitting bench in Turner's return

Sosa is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Padres. After Trea Turner was placed on the 10-day injured list May 4, Sosa took over as the Phillies' primary shortstop and slashed an impressive .275/.336/.505 with four home runs, three stolen bases, 22 runs and 17 RBI in 32 games while the two-time All-Star was sidelined. Turner will make his return from the IL on Monday and will immediately step back into his everyday role at shortstop, leaving Sosa without a regular spot in the lineup. Manager Rob Thomson said earlier this month that Sosa could get some reps in the outfield upon Turner's return, but David Dahl, Brandon Marsh and Nick Castellanos will form the Phillies' outfield trio from left to right Monday. With no path to steady playing time at the moment, Sosa looks to be a drop candidate outside of deeper mixed leagues or NL-only leagues.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Homers in loss

Sosa went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a 6-2 loss to the Orioles on Saturday. Sosa gave the Phillies an early 2-0 lead when he homered off Grayson Rodriguez in the second inning. Sosa hit .306 in May with three home runs, but he has gone just 8-for-37 with one long ball in June. According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, Trea Turner's return from a hamstring injury is nearing, which means Sosa will likely return to a bench role in the coming days.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Receiving rest day

Sosa is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox. Sosa will get a breather after he went 4-for-20 with three RBI and two runs while starting each of the Phillies' last six games at shortstop. Bryson Stott will move over from the keystone to cover shortstop in Sosa's stead, opening up second base for Whit Merrifield.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Could get looks in outfield

Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Saturday that Sosa could be an option to see reps in the outfield once shortstop Trea Turner (hamstring) returns from the 10-day injured list, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Sosa has logged a total of just 5.1 innings of outfield in the majors and has never started a game in the outfield in the professional ranks. He's been outstanding at shortstop since Turner got hurt, slashing .310/.380/.606 with three home runs in 22 games, which has the Phillies contemplating other ways of keeping him in the lineup long term. The Phillies could have an opening in left field if Brandon Marsh (hamstring) needs to miss time, but Sosa will still be needed at shortstop until Turner is back.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Not in Sunday's lineup

Sosa is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals. Sosa started the past 10 games at shortstop and posted a 1.026 OPS during that span, but he'll take a seat for Sunday's contest. Bryson Stott will shift to shortstop while Kody Clemens receives a start at the keystone.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Sosa is not in the lineup for Tuesday's contest against the Rangers. Sosa has received most of the starts at shortstop since Trea Turner went down and boasts a .924 OPS over that time. However, the Phillies are going with Bryson Stott at shortstop and Kody Clemens at second base versus righty Jon Gray and the Rangers.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Heading to bench Monday

Sosa is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. Sosa started at shortstop in the Phillies' first two games after Trea Turner (hamstring) landed on the 10-day injured list, going 2-for-8 with a two RBI, one run and one stolen base. Though he could still end up serving as the primary option at shortstop during Turner's absence, Sosa will give way to Bryson Stott on Monday while Whit Merrifield fills in at Stott's usual spot at second base.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Starting Saturday

Sosa is starting at shortstop and batting eighth in Saturday's game against the Giants. Sosa appears set to take over as the primary shortstop with Trea Turner landing on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. Sosa has appeared in nine games this season and is 6-for-21 with two runs, one double, one home run and two RBI over that span.

  • Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Excels in start at second base

Sosa went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and an additional run batted in Sunday against the Nationals. Sosa made his first appearance in over a week, filling in for Bryson Stott -- who got the day off -- at second base. He delivered his first long ball of the campaign, tagging MacKenzie Gore for a solo homer in the fifth frame. He got only two looks at the plate, with Stott coming in to replace Sosa in the eighth inning. The utility man should continue to play sparingly, but he's a decent bat when in the lineup.
