  • Orioles' Paul Fry: Rough outing in non-save situation

Fry allowed three runs on four hits and two walks with one strikeout in two innings during Sunday's 8-0 loss to the Rays. This wasn't a great performance for the Orioles in general, but Fry was responsible for three of the four runs the Rays put up in the seventh inning after Bryan Baker struggled. Fry is considered part of the Orioles' closer committee with Dillon Tate and Jorge Lopez, though it remains to be seen how often they'll have leads to protect. Fry struggled to a 6.08 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 60:35 K:BB in 47.1 innings last season, and he finished 2021 at Triple-A Norfolk. The southpaw will need to be more efficient at keeping runs off the board in all assignments to continue seeing high-leverage work despite being part of an inexperienced bullpen.

  • Orioles' Paul Fry: Could be in closer mix

Fry could be a candidate to pick up save opportunities along with Dillon Tate and Jorge Lopez after the Orioles tradedTanner Scott and Cole Sulser to the Marlins on Sunday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Tate appears to be the leading candidate for the closing gig, but the bullpen is in flux after the trade. Fry looks set to make the team after giving up one run in 3.1 innings this spring with six strikeouts against two walks.

  • Orioles' Paul Fry: Logs scoreless inning

Fry walked one and struck out two in a scoreless inning Tuesday versus the Angels. The southpaw has had few scoreless appearances lately, as he's kept runs off the board in only five of his 10 outings in August. Fry has allowed 15 runs (13 earned), nine hits and 14 walks while striking out only four in his last 6.2 innings. The 29-year-old had been an effective reliever prior to his recent struggles, but he owns a 5.36 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 60:33 K:BB across 47 innings overall.

Fry (4-5) took the loss versus Tampa Bay on Sunday. He recorded one out while allowing four runs on a hit and three walks. Fry threw only 12 of his 25 pitches for strikes in an erratic and difficult appearance in the eighth inning. The southpaw has completely fallen apart in August with nine runs allowed in two innings across four appearances. He's now taken two straight losses while his ERA has ballooned from 3.35 from the end of July to its current 5.10 with the recent struggles.

  • Orioles' Paul Fry: Struggles again

Fry (4-4) took the loss Friday versus Tampa Bay. He failed to record an out while allowing three runs on a hit and two walks. The 29-year-old was brought in for the eighth inning, but he allowed three straight batters to reach base. Dillon Tate then allowed all of the inherited runners to score as Tampa Bay took control of the contest. Fry has gotten off to a terrible start in August with five runs allowed over his last 1.2 innings. His ERA has skyrocketed to 4.29 with a 1.21 WHIP and 57:23 K:BB in 42 innings, and continued struggles could limit his fantasy appeal further after he's already lost out on closing duties.

The southpaw has earned two wins and a hold during that time. Fry had been used as a closer earlier in the season, but he entered Friday's game in the fifth inning, and he hasn't earned a save since June 4.

  • Orioles' Paul Fry: Takes walkoff loss

Fry (2-3) allowed a run on a hit and a walk with one strikeout in one-third of an inning Friday, taking the loss versus the Angels. Fry was able to get the second out in the ninth inning, but Shohei Ohtani stole second base and Jared Walsh hit a walkoff single to end the back-and-forth game. Across his last 11 outings, Fry has given up eight runs on 12 hits and eight walks with 11 strikeouts in 11 innings. He has a 3.77 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 42:16 K:BB across 31 innings overall. With two holds, two wins and two losses in his last six appearances, Fry seems to have ceded closing duties to Cole Sulser for the time being.

  • Orioles' Paul Fry: Snags win Monday

Fry (2-2) allowed three runs on three hits and struck out one in 1.1 innings, earning the win Monday versus Houston. Fry pitched well in the eighth inning to keep the game tied before Baltimore's offense put up a five-spot in the ninth. The southpaw was kept in the game, but he struggled in the bottom of the ninth, and eventually Adam Plutko was called upon to close out the contest. The tough outing inflated Fry's ERA to 3.68 with a 1.23 WHIP and 41:14 K:BB across 29.1 innings. Despite taking on the closer role in late May, the 28-year-old has just two saves to go with seven holds and two blown saves in 30 outings.

  • Orioles' Paul Fry: Picks up second save

Fry allowed two hits and no walks while striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save against Cleveland on Friday. Manager Brandon Hyde said in late May that he wanted to use Fry as an option to close out games, and the southpaw picked up his first save since April 7 in Friday's win. Cesar Valdez, Hunter Harvey and Cole Sulser could see some save opportunities as well, leaving the closer picture in Baltimore very muddled.
