Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Handed 11th loss
Alcantara (13-11) allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three over six innings to take the loss versus the Padres on Sunday.
After a midweek cameo as a closer, Alcantara was back in his usual starting role Sunday. It went about as well as his last few starts, which is to say not that well at all. He's given up at least four runs over each of his last five starts, allowing 23 runs across 27.1 innings in that span. Alcantara is at a 3.91 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 152:59 K:BB through 212 innings over 34 games (33 starts) this season. The Miami ace is projected for one more start this year, which is expected to be at home versus Atlanta.

Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Makes surprise appearance for save
Alcantara walked one in a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks.
With the Marlins still technically holding onto thin playoff hopes, Alcantara stepped up just two days after his most recent start to close out this game. The Marlins are without Pete Fairbanks (hand) for the rest of the year, but Alcantara is not expected to move to the bullpen on a full-time basis. This was Alcantara's first relief appearance since he began his career with eight games out of the Cardinals' bullpen in 2017. The workhorse starter has a 3.84 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 149:58 K:BB through 206 innings over 33 games (32 starts) this year. Assuming Wednesday's appearance functioned as a between-starts bullpen session, Alcantara is lined up to pitch over the weekend in San Diego.

Alcantara was hampered by a three-run third inning that included a two-run homer from Lars Nootbaar. The veteran hurler has allowed four-plus runs in four straight starts and hasn't earned a win since Aug. 8. With a 13-10 record, 3.86 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 149:57 K:BB over 205 innings (32 starts), Alcantara is tentatively scheduled to pitch Sunday at San Diego.

Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Gives up three homers in loss
Alcantara (13-10) took the loss against the Mets on Tuesday, allowing seven runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out one batter in 4.1 innings.
Alcantara put the Marlins in a large hole early, with four of the six runs he gave up through the first three innings coming on home runs from Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto and Brett Baty. It's the fourth time this season (and second time since the All-Star break) that Alcantara has given up three home runs in a start, and this marks the fourth time this year that he's given up at least seven earned runs in an outing. He has an 0-4 record over his last six starts with a 4.95 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over 36.1 innings. Alcantara will look to get back on track next week against the Diamondbacks.

Kansas City made its mark in the third and fifth innings, bringing across a pair of runs in each frame to cost Alcantara a quality start. Saturday marked the second time in three games that Alcantara allowed at least eight hits in a start. Alcantara was solid overall Wednesday, logging a fifth straight quality start, though the Marlins mustered just one run against Aaron Nola in an eventual 4-1 defeat. Alcantara (13-7) took the loss Friday as the Marlins were downed 1-0 by the Reds, allowing one run on three hits and four walks over seven innings. He struck out out.
The veteran right-hander didn't have his best stuff or best command, but Alcantara still put together his fourth straight quality start and MLB-leading 19th of the season on 103 pitches (67 strikes), only to have Chase Burns be just a little bit stingier opposite him. Alcantara was also a little unlucky -- he saw his scoreless streak end at 25.2 innings when Eugenio Suarez dumped a ball into left field that Heriberto Hernandez badly misplayed, allowing Tyler Stephenson to lumber home from first base as the ball rolled to the warning track on what was officially ruled a double. Alcantara has become a throwback workhorse of late, lasting at least seven innings in six of eight starts since the beginning of July while compiling a 1.80 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 46:14 K:BB through 55 frames. He'll look to get more offensive support in his next outing, which is set to come on the road next week in Philadelphia.
