  • Padres' Tanner Scott: Notches save against former club

Scott gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless 10th inning Saturday to record his 19th save of the season in a 9-8 win over the Marlins. Facing the club that sent him west at the trade deadline, Scott needed only 12 pitches (eight strikes) to dispatch his former teammates in the 10th after Robert Suarez had worked a perfect ninth. It was Scott's first save in a Padres uniform, and he also has a win and two holds in five appearances for San Diego with a 3.86 ERA and 5:3 K:BB in 4.2 innings. While Suarez remains entrenched as the closer, Scott has quickly found a home in the high-leverage crew.

  • Padres' Tanner Scott: Wild in relief Wednesday

Scott (7-5) was credited with the win against Pittsburgh on Wednesday despite allowing two runs (one earned) on no hits and three walks in one-third of an inning. Scott entered with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning and got Oneil Cruz to ground out to preserve a 6-6 tie and send the game to an extra frame. After San Diego took a three-run lead in the top of the 10th, Scott returned but couldn't find the plate, walking three straight batters to force home a run. Adrian Morejon then took over and allowed an inherited runner to score on a wild pitch before finding a way out of the jam, notching his first save and handing Scott the victory. Despite the win, the outing was an uncharacteristically poor one for Scott, who threw only six of 18 pitches for strikes. He's given up three runs (two earned) over three appearances consisting of 2.2 frames since joining San Diego at the trade deadline but still has an impressive 1.49 ERA on the campaign.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Records another save

Scott earned a save against the Orioles on Wednesday, issuing one walk and striking out one batter over one scoreless inning. Scott entered in the top of the ninth and issued a leadoff walk, but that was wiped out when the next batter he faced grounded into a double play. The left-handed closer then got Ramon Urias to strike out to finish off the victory. The save was the second in as many days for Scott, and he extended his streak of scoreless outings to 16. Over that stretch, Scott has gone 10-for-10 in save opportunities while posting a 20:6 K:BB across 16.2 frames.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Records 16th save

Scott struck out two in a perfect inning to earn the save in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Mets. Scott extended his scoreless streak to 14 straight appearances as he mowed down the Mets in another stellar performance. The 2024 All-Star has not allowed a run since June 13 and is looking like one of the more attractive ninth-inning options available at the trade deadline. The 29-year-old has a 1.27 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with 48 strikeouts over 42.2 innings this season.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Secures 15th save

Scott struck out one in 1.1 perfect innings Friday to record his 15th save of the season in a 6-4 win over the Mets. The lefty fired 14 of 18 pitches for strikes as he carved up the top of New York's order. Any save for Scott could be his last in a Marlins uniform as trade rumors swirl around the pending free agent, and he's only helped his market value with a 13-appearance scoreless streak that dates back to June 13 -- a stretch in which he's converted all seven of his save chances while giving up only four hits with a 15:5 K:BB in 13.2 innings.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Clean inning for save

Scott struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Saturday's 4-3 win over the White Sox. Scott is on a 10-inning scoreless streak, during which he's maintained an 11:3 K:BB with five saves and a win. The closer continues to excel for the Marlins, though the team's poor performance has limited him to 13 saves this year. He's posted a 1.42 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 42:23 K:BB through 38 innings, though he's made progress to cut back on walks during his recent strong stretch.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Notches 12th save

Scott struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Saturday to record his 12th save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Phillies. The southpaw delivered his eighth straight scoreless appearance on 12 pitches (eight strikes), and Scott has racked up four saves in four trips to the mound over the last week. The 29-year-old closer has put his shaky start to 2024 firmly behind him, and he sports a 1.50 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 38:23 K:BB through 36 innings while converting 12 of 14 save chances.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Records 11th save

Scott earned a save against the Phillies on Thursday, striking out one batter in a perfect ninth inning. Scott made quick work of Philadelphia in the ninth frame, retiring the side in order on nine pitches. The lefty closer has not given up a run in any of his past seven outings, tallying a win and three saves despite a mediocre 5:3 K:BB over seven innings during that span. Scott is 11-for-13 in save chances on the season and has an excellent 1.54 ERA across 35 frames.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Collects 10th save

Scott earned the save in Tuesday's 2-1 victory against Kansas City, pitching a scoreless inning while allowing one hit. Scott worked around a single yielded to Salvador Perez and subsequent pinch-run stolen base by Dairon Blanco to secure double-digit saves for the third consecutive season. The left-handed closer has been especially stingy since May 1, producing a 0.84 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB across 21.1 innings. Scott has blown only two saves in 2024 and is firmly cemented as the closer in Miami.

Scott has not allowed an earned run since April 14 and finished May with three wins, three saves and a hold in nine appearances. He's up to seven saves on the year now and carries a 1.64 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 23:18 K:BB in 22 innings.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Converts on sixth save

Scott earned the save Wednesday against Milwaukee, allowing one hit and no walks across a scoreless inning with one strikeout. Scott is now 6-for-7 on save chances this season and has added four tallies in the win column. The 29-year-old has been charged with at least one earned run in just two of his 21 appearances, owning a 1.71 ERA with a 22:18 K:BB across 21.0 innings.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Locks down fifth save

Scott earned the save in Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Tigers, allowing two hits while striking out one in a scoreless inning. The Tigers made things interesting with a pair of two-out singles off Scott in the ninth inning before the left-hander struck out Riley Greene, who represented the winning run, closing out Miami's shutout victory. Scott hasn't allowed an earned run in his last 10.1 innings, striking out 12 in that span. He's 5-for-6 in save opportunities with a 2.00 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 19:17 K:BB across 18 innings this season.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Nabs win Tuesday

Scott (2-4) picked up the win in Tuesday's extra-inning victory over the Tigers, giving up a hit and a walk in a scoreless ninth inning. He struck out two. Rather than being held back for a possible save situation in extra innings on the road, Scott got the call in the ninth with the score tied 0-0 and was able to escape the jam he created. The southpaw hasn't allowed an earned run in 10 straight appearances, but Scott's been far from sharp during that time, posting an 11:7 K:BB in 9.1 innings. That's still an improvement on his early-season performance, and his 2.12 ERA on the year isn't supported by his 1.53 WHIP or 18:17 K:BB in 17 frames. Scott is still the Marlins' closer and has converted four of five save chances, but A.J. Puk got the save in the 10th inning Tuesday and could be a threat to take the job now that he's moved back into the bullpen.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Grabs first win

Scott (1-4) earned the win Tuesday over Colorado, allowing an unearned run on a hit and a walk in one inning. He struck out two. Scott allowed the free runner to score in the top of the 10th inning on a two-out Ryan McMahon double before ultimately striking out Hunter Goodman to end the frame. The Marlins would then score twice in the bottom half, completing the comeback victory and giving Scott his first win this year. The left-hander hasn't allowed an earned run in his last six appearances -- he's 4-for-5 in save chances this year with a 2.84 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 12:13 K:BB across 12.2 innings.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Picks up save No. 3

Scott earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning during Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs. He struck out one and allowed two hits and no walks. Bryan De La Cruz's two-run homer in the top of the ninth gave Miami a 3-2 lead, and Scott closed out the bottom of the frame to finish off the comeback despite giving up singles to the first two batters he faced. The Marlins closer has struggled with his command early in the season, as Saturday's outing was just his third time in nine appearances without issuing a walk. Scott is 3-for-4 in save opportunities and has a 3.72 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and 9:12 K:BB across 9.2 innings.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Locks down second save

Scott earned the save Tuesday against the Giants, working around a pair of walks while striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning. Scott didn't make things easy on himself, issuing a pair of one-out walks before striking out Thairo Estrada and inducing a game-ending pop fly from Wilmer Flores to grab his second save of the year. It was ultimately a nice bounce-back outing from Scott after the left-hander allowed three runs while blowing a save against Atlanta in his last appearance Sunday. Overall, Scott is 0-3 with a 4.15 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and an alarming 25.6 percent walk rate through his first 8.2 innings this year. While the left-hander remains the top closing option in Miami, Scott hasn't seen many save chances with the Marlins struggling out of the gate.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Blows first save

Scott (0-3) took the loss Sunday and blew his first save of the season, giving up three runs on two hits and a walk in the ninth inning against Atlanta. He struck out one. Called upon to protect a 7-6 lead, Scott instead served up a massive three-run homer to center field by Marcell Ozuna. It's been a brutal start to the season for the left-handed closer, and he's saddled with a 4.70 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and ghastly 7:10 K:BB through 7.2 innings. Scott's job security might be hanging by a thread, and potentially the only thing keeping him in the ninth right now for the Marlins is that no one else in the bullpen has pitched particularly well either.

  • Marlins' Tanner Scott: Wild again in Monday's loss

Scott (0-2) took the loss Monday against the Angels, giving up a run on three walks in one inning without striking out a batter. The control issues that beset Scott during spring training haven't gone away to begin the regular season. The southpaw entered a 4-4 tie in the top of the eighth inning and immediately walked the first three batters he faced, tossing only 14 of 27 pitches for strikes. Through his first three appearances of 2024, Scott has stumbled to a 5:6 K:BB in 3.0 innings -- when the 0-5 Marlins eventually do start building late leads to protect, he may have a very short leash as the closer. Anthony Bender, who has a 5:1 K:BB through his first 2.2 innings this season, might be the top candidate to replace him in the ninth inning at the moment given Andrew Nardi's early 20.25 ERA.
