  • Luke Farrell: Playing days over

Farrell announced Sept. 27 via his personal Instagram account that he has retired from professional baseball.

After being released from his minor-league contract with the Nationals in July, Farrell had most recently pitched in the Mexican League to close out the 2024 season. Before his stint south of the border, the 33-year-old right-hander had seen MLB action over parts of six seasons from 2017 through 2022 with the Royals, Reds, Cubs, Rangers and Twins. In 69 career appearances (seven starts), Farrell turned in a 5.00 ERA and 1.49 WHIP across 102.2 innings.

  • Nationals' Luke Farrell: Signs on with Nats

Farrell signed a minor-league contract with the Nationals on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old righty spent 2023 at Triple-A Charlotte in the White Sox organization, posting a 5.56 ERA and 52:27 K:BB over 55 frames. Farrell has experience starting and relieving, but 62 of his 69 appearances at the big-league level have been out of the bullpen.

  • White Sox's Luke Farrell: Gets deal with ChiSox

Farrell signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Monday.

Farrell is expected to report to the White Sox's spring training complex in Arizona to get stretched out after he had been a free agent since the conclusion of the 2022 season. Once he's fully ramped up, Farrell is expected to report to Triple-A Charlotte, where he could handle a swingman role. He logged 15 innings in the big leagues in 2022 over six appearances (two starts) between the Cubs and Reds, pitching to a 5.40 ERA and 1.67 WHIP.

  • Reds' Luke Farrell: Outrighted to Triple-A

Farrell cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Louisville on Saturday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.

Farrell was designated for assignment by Cincinnati on Thursday and will choose to accept an outright assignment rather than testing free agency. He made 17 appearances (11 starts) at Triple-A Iowa earlier this year and posted a 5.03 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 59 innings.

  • Reds' Luke Farrell: Designated for assignment

Farrell was designated for assignment by the Reds on Thursday.

Farrell has now been placed on waivers by two different teams during the month of September. He made two appearances for Cincinnati, giving up four earned runs over four total innings.

  • Reds' Luke Farrell: Added to active roster

Farrell was added to the Reds' active roster Saturday.

Farrell was claimed off waivers Friday after being designated for assignment by the Cubs, and he'll join Cincinnati's active roster ahead of Saturday's game against the Brewers. If the right-hander doesn't pitch out of the bullpen in the coming days, he'll likely be a candidate to start one of the games during the Reds' doubleheader against the Pirates on Tuesday.

  • Reds' Luke Farrell: Claimed by Reds

Farrell was claimed off waivers by the Reds on Friday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

After being designated for assignment by the Cubs on Tuesday, Farrell will get another shot with the Reds. There's a chance that he is called up to start one of the games during the Reds' upcoming doubleheader with the Pirates on Tuesday. The 31-year-old has produced a 4.09 ERA and 1.36 WHIP with nine strikeouts over 11 innings in four appearances with the Cubs this season including two starts.

  • Cubs' Luke Farrell: Designated for assignment

Farrell was designated for assignment Tuesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Farrell has a 4.09 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and nine strikeouts in 11 innings across four appearances out of the big-league bullpen. The move clears a roster spot for Tuesday's starter, Wade Miley.

  • Cubs' Luke Farrell: Heads to bullpen

Farrell covered two scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Saturday's 8-4 loss to the Cardinals, striking out two while allowing no hits and issuing two walks.

Farrell made a pair of abbreviated starts Aug. 24 against St. Louis and Aug. 31 in Toronto, but he'll likely work in relief moving forward with Wade Miley (shoulder) set to return from the 60-day injured list to start Tuesday and with Justin Steele (back) expected to rejoin the rotation later on this week. Don't expect the right-hander to have much fantasy value while typically working in lower-leverage spots or as a mop-up man out of the bullpen.

  • Cubs' Luke Farrell: Receives another start

Farrell is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays in Toronto, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Due to a doubleheader with the Cardinals early last week, Farrell was summoned from Triple-A Iowa to join the Cubs as a temporary sixth starter. After giving up one run over 4.1 innings in a no-decision against St. Louis last Wednesday, Farrell made a relief appearance in Milwaukee over the weekend, but he'll be needed in the rotation once again for the series finale in Toronto because scheduled starter Justin Steele wasn't able to enter Canada due to his vaccination status. Steele had been day-to-day with a back injury coming out of his most recent appearance, but assuming the lefty is ready to slot back into the rotation next week, Farrell could find himself back in the bullpen or at Triple-A following Wednesday's start.

  • Cubs' Luke Farrell: Allows one run in first start

Farrell did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing one run on six hits and no walks over 4.1 innings against the Cardinals. He struck out three.

In his first start after being called up, Farrell mostly held the Cardinals in check as the only damage on the night came from a Lars Nootbaar solo home run in the fifth. That said, he was fortunate to only give up one run, as St. Louis recorded multiple hits in both the third and the fourth innings, and he managed not to walk a batter despite throwing only 43 of 71 pitches for strikes. It's unlikely Farrell will stick in the rotation, but if he does, he would likely draw a matchup against the Blue Jays next week.

  • Cubs' Luke Farrell: Contract selected Wednesday

Farrell had his contract selected from Triple-A Iowa and will start for the Cubs against the Cardinals on Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Farrell joined Chicago on a minor-league deal in April and has a 5.03 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 49:28 K:BB across 59 innings at Triple-A this year. It's likely to be a spot start for the 31-year-old, who has a 4.93 ERA over 63 career appearances in the big leagues.

  • Cubs' Luke Farrell: Lined up to join big club Wednesday

Cubs manager David Ross said Farrell is expected to receive a call-up from Triple-A Iowa to start Wednesday's game against the Cardinals at Wrigley Field, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Ross said he wanted to wait until Tuesday's doubleheader with St. Louis concludes before locking Farrell in for Wednesday's start, but the Cubs look to be leaning toward bringing up the 31-year-old lefty journeyman to fill the opening in the rotation rather than calling up one of their top two pitching prospects -- Caleb Kilian or Hayden Wesneski -- from Triple-A. Farrell, who made 20 appearances in the majors with the Twins in 2021, has pitched exclusively at Iowa this season, compiling a 5.03 ERA and 1.46 WHIP across 59 innings.

  • Cubs' Luke Farrell: Back in action at Triple-A

Farrell (undisclosed) has struck out five over 3.1 innings while giving up one run on one hit and three walks across two appearances for Triple-A Iowa since being reinstated from the 7-day injured list Tuesday.

Farrell was sidelined for about two and a half weeks with the unspecified injury. The journeyman right-hander owns a 4.39 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 26.2 innings with Iowa on the season.

  • Cubs' Luke Farrell: Placed on injured list

Farrell was placed on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday with an unspecified injury, Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register reports.

Farrell has made six appearances (four starts) in Iowa this year and has posted a 4.63 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 23.1 innings. He gave up four runs in 4.1 innings during Saturday's start and is apparently dealing with an injury that will force him to miss at least a week.

  • Cubs' Luke Farrell: Lands with Cubs

Farrell signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs on Monday, Chris Hilburn-Trenkle of Baseball America reports.

Farrell spent the 2021 campaign with the Twins, finishing the year with a 4.74 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and a 25:13 K:BB across 24.2 frames (one start). Following Monday's signing, he'll likely head to Triple-A Iowa where he'll serve as bullpen depth.

  • Twins' Luke Farrell: Sent to Triple-A

Farrell was outrighted to Triple-A St. Paul on Friday, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.

Farrell finished the campaign as a member of the big-league bullpen, but he's been removed from the 40-man roster heading into the offseason. The 30-year-old made 20 appearances for Minnesota this year and had a 4.74 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 25:13 K:BB over 24.2 innings.

  • Twins' Luke Farrell: Lit up as opener

Farrell (1-1) allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out one in one inning, taking the loss Sunday versus Toronto.

The right-hander started the bullpen game for Minnesota, but he allowed Toronto to go all the way through the order while piling up five runs. Farrell's ERA inflated from 1.31 to 3.45 with the nightmarish start Sunday, which suggests he may not be asked to open another game any time soon. He also has a 1.29 WHIP, 22:8 K:BB and one hold through 21.2 innings this season.

  • Twins' Luke Farrell: Starting bullpen game

Farrell will start Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Farrell has a 1.31 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 21:8 K:BB across 20.2 innings this season, and he'll make his first start of the campaign Sunday with the Twins employing a bullpen game. The 30-year-old covered a season-high 2.1 frames his last time out Monday and shouldn't be expected to go much deeper than that in Toronto.

  • Twins' Luke Farrell: Back from IL

Farrell (oblique) was activated from the 60-day injured list Sunday, Brandon Warne of Access Twins reports.

Farrell is back in Minnesota's bullpen after an oblique strain sidelined him since late June. The righty was an effective relief option in 13 games before getting injured, as he posted a 1.76 ERA and 17:6 K:BB in 15.1 innings. He takes the roster spot of Andrew Albers, whom the Twins optioned Sunday.
