Tigers' Matt Manning: Back in action
Manning (lat) was reinstated from the minor-league injured list Thursday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Manning will start for Triple-A Toledo on Thursday after being on the shelf for nearly two months. He didn't make any rehab outings prior to being activated, so he could face a limited pitch count.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Resumes mound work
Manning (lat) has resumed throwing bullpen sessions twice weekly and is aiming to return to action before Triple-A Toledo's regular season ends Sept. 22, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Manning last pitched July 14 before informing the Tigers during the All-Star break that he was dealing with a right lat strain. He was shut down from activity for about a month before he resumed his throwing program. Though both Manning and the Tigers are optimistic he'll pitch again this season for the Triple-A club, he may not have enough time to get fully stretched out for a traditional starting role.

Tigers' Matt Manning: On Triple-A IL with lat injury
Triple-A Toledo placed Manning on its 7-day injured list Friday due to a right lat strain.
Manning has been with Toledo since late May after making five starts with the Tigers early in the season. The 26-year-old had turned in a 4.53 ERA across 59.2 innings with Toledo and looked to be a candidate to step in as the Tigers' No. 5 starter coming out of the All-Star break with Casey Mize (hamstring) on the injured list, but the lat strain will remove Manning from consideration for a call-up.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Optioned to Triple-A
Manning was optioned to Triple-A Toledo after Detroit's 9-1 loss to Toronto on Thursday.
The 26-year-old righty will head back down to Toledo with Kenta Maeda being reinstated from the 15-day injured list. Manning has started five games for the Tigers this season, recording a 4.88 ERA and 1.55 WHIP with a 23:12 K:BB across 27.2 innings.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Getting another start
Manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday that Manning will start Friday's game against the Blue Jays, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Manning was expected to be replaced by Kenta Maeda (illness) in the Tigers' rotation after Maeda threw three innings in a rehab start Sunday. However, Detroit will give Manning another turn in the rotation despite having allowed three or more runs in each of his last four starts. As Petzold notes, Hinch doesn't plan on using a six-man rotation, so it's unlikely that Manning will stick around on a long-term basis.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Allows 10 hits Sunday
Manning allowed four runs on 10 hits and three walks over five innings Sunday against the Diamondbacks. He struck out one and did not factor into the decision.
Manning surrendered a pair of runs in the opening frame and then allowed a run in the second and fourth. He allowed at least one baserunner in every inning and managed just four whiffs on 86 pitches, leading to a season-low one strikeout. Over two starts while filling in for Kenta Maeda (illness), Manning's allowed seven runs on 19 hits while posting a 6:4 K:BB in 10.2 innings. He was unable to take advantage of the opportunity with an opening in the rotation and figures to be optioned back to Triple-A Toledo this week with Maeda set to return May 24.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Strikes out five in no-decision
Manning allowed three runs on nine hits across 5.2 innings and did not factor into the decision Monday against the Marlins. He walked one and struck out five.
Manning was recalled from Triple-A Toledo before the game, and he managed to limit damage despite being a tad too hittable. The five strikeouts helped the cause and continued a promising trend for the righty. Across 22.2 innings in the majors this year, Manning now has 22 strikeouts. He also has 24 strikeouts over 19 innings in the minors. For a pitcher who posted a 5.8 K/9 for Detroit in 2023, it's a step in the right direction. Manning should continue to start with Kenta Maeda (illness) out, and he's penciled in to take the mound again Sunday against the Diamondbacks on the road.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Recalled ahead of Monday's start
The Tigers recalled Manning from Triple-A Toledo on Monday.
He'll start Monday against the Marlins and should be set for at least a couple of turns through the big-league rotation while Kenta Maeda (illness) is on the 15-day injured list. Manning has been solid during his time with the Tigers this season, putting up a 4.24 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 17 strikeouts in 17 innings through his first three starts.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Slated to start for big club Monday
The Tigers will promote Manning from Triple-A Toledo to start Monday against the Marlins in Detroit, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Manning is set to rejoin the big club after Kenta Maeda was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to a viral illness. The 26-year-old right-hander holds a 0-1 record over three major-league starts this season and sports a 4.24 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 17 innings.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Likely Maeda replacement
Manning will likely rejoin the big-league rotation with Kenta Maeda (viral illness) being placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Jack Flaherty is currently listed as the starter for Sunday's game against the Astros, but given that Manning was scratched from his Saturday start for Toledo, it's possible he could start Sunday, or at least Monday against the Marlins. Manning has a 4.24 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 17 strikeouts in 17 innings through three MLB starts this year.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Added as 27th man
The Tigers added Manning to the active roster to start the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals.
Manning will be making his third start of the season Tuesday. He looked good during his first two big-league outings, posting a 2.92 ERA and 0.89 WHIP across 12.1 innings, though he will likely be sent back to Triple-A Toledo after Tuesday's game.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Returns to Toledo
The Tigers returned Manning to Triple-A Toledo after Tuesday's win over St. Louis.
Manning allowed four runs in 4.2 innings and walked away with a no-decision during his third start of the year. The 26-year-old righty has often been the Tigers' first choice to come up from the minors for spot starts, and there's a good chance he gets a few more opportunities to pitch in the big leagues as the season goes on.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Fans seven in spot start
Manning came away with a no-decision in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks over 4.2 innings in an 11-6 win. He struck out seven.
The right-hander got spotted a 4-0 lead early, but Manning fell apart in the fifth inning and exited after 89 pitches (63 strikes). Tuesday's effort was the shortest of his three spot starts this season, and while he's pitched reasonably well when given the opportunity, Detroit doesn't have a more permanent opening in its rotation for him right now. Manning will likely head back to Triple-A Toledo with a 4.24 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 17:8 K:BB through 17 big-league innings.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Confirmed for Tuesday's start
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch confirmed that Manning will be called up from Triple-A Toledo to start the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader versus the Cardinals, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Manning had been on turn at Toledo but instead will take the hill Tuesday with the big club since they have a need for a spot starter. The right-hander has looked good in his two previous starts with Detroit this season, yielding four runs while putting up a 10:6 K:BB over 12.1 innings. He will be designated as the 27th man for Tuesday's doubleheader and is likely to be sent back down to the minors after the start.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Could serve as 27th man Tuesday
The Tigers could call Manning up from Triple-A Toledo to start one game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Manning's next turn with Toledo falls Tuesday, so he's an obvious option to start for the big club instead. He's previously made two starts with the Tigers this season, giving up four runs while turning in a 10:6 K:BB over 12.1 innings.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Fans seven in loss
Manning (0-1) took the loss against the Twins on Saturday, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over 6.2 innings.
Manning struggled out of the gate, walking each of the first two batters he faced to open the game before allowing the Twins' first run to come home on a sacrifice fly. The right-hander was then victimized by the long ball in the third and sixth innings as Detroit struggled to back him with anything on offense. It wasn't all bad for Manning, however, as he did fan seven batters on the day while producing 12 swinging strikes. He's gone at least five innings in each of his two starts this season and is still sporting a 2.92 ERA following the loss.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Returns to Triple-A
Manning was returned to Triple-A Toledo after Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Twins.
The right-hander was called up to start the nightcap Saturday and took the loss after giving up four runs with a 7:2 K:BB over 6.2 innings. Manning has a 2.92 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in two outings as a spot starter for Detroit, and he'll remain the No. 1 candidate for a call-up when the big club again needs a starter.

Tigers' Matt Manning: Confirmed for Saturday start
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch announced Manning will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Twins, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
The announcement is hardly a surprise, as Manning was scratched from his scheduled start with Toledo on Wednesday in preparation of a postponement. The right-hander made his season debut April 4 against the Mets and didn't allow a hit with four walks and three strikeouts over 5.2 scoreless frames.
