• Padres' Triston McKenzie: Moved to minor-league camp

  The Padres reassigned McKenzie to minor-league camp Saturday. McKenzie was in Padres camp as a non-roster invitee after signing a minor-league contract in December. The team has had big question marks at the back of the rotation throughout spring training, but McKenzie wasn't able to make a serious bid for a big-league role, posting a 9.95 ERA, 2.84 WHIP and 11:9 K:BB over 6.1 innings spanning four appearances. The right-hander has dealt with multiple injuries over the past three years and has struggled during his stints in the majors during that span, so he may need a prolonged run of success in the minors before he sees a big-league mound again.

• Padres' Triston McKenzie: Velocity up in Padres camp

  McKenzie has averaged 95.7 mph with his four-seamer this spring, which is up a full two mph from last season, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. McKenzie has never reached 97 mph in a major-league game before, but he topped that mark 10 times in his last Cactus League appearance and peaked at 98.8 mph. The righty gained a bit of weight over the offseason and also pitched in winter ball for the first time, but he admitted to having "no idea" where the extra velocity is coming from. Unfortunately, McKenzie's results this spring have not been as encouraging as his velocity uptick, as he's been tagged for six runs with a 6:7 K:BB over 4.1 innings. McKenzie is in camp as a non-roster invitee and is competing for a spot in the Padres' rotation. He seems to be on the outside looking in for now, but he'll have another chance to improve his standing with an appearance Friday versus the Athletics. McKenzie -- who has a June opt-out clause in his contract -- has a 5.46 ERA over 24 appearances (20 starts) at the big-league level since 2023.

• Padres' Triston McKenzie: Invited to Padres' camp

  McKenzie signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training, Aram Leighton of JustBaseball.com reports McKenzie gave up seven earned runs over 5.2 innings with the Guardians this past season before being outrighted to the minor leagues in late April. His performance didn't improve following his demotion, as he turned in a 7.40 ERA and 2.13 WHIP over 20.2 frames split between rookie ball and Triple-A. He'll now attempt to revive his career with the Padres, but he will likely have to prove he can handle minor-league hitters again before getting a shot with the big club.

• Guardians' Triston McKenzie: Returns to action at Triple-A

  McKenzie (illness) was transferred to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday and pitched in relief in the team's 7-5 loss to Toledo, working around two walks and one hit in a scoreless inning. In an effort to have McKenzie work through his control issues in a low-pressure environment, the Guardians assigned the right-hander to the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on May 14, a few weeks after he was outrighted off the 40-man roster. McKenzie had struggled to a 7.24 ERA and 1.68 WHIP in 13.2 innings over seven appearances in the ACL before exiting his most recent appearance June 28 due to an illness, but after addressing his mechanics behind the scenes over the past several weeks, he was cleared to join the Guardians' top affiliate. Though he came through with a scoreless frame Sunday in his return to game action, McKenzie's control problems lingered. He spotted just 15 of his 28 pitches for strikes and also threw a wild pitch.

  McKenzie was removed from Saturday's start in the Arizona Complex League after two-thirds of an inning due to illness, SI.com reports. McKenzie has been with the Guardian's rookie-level squad since the end of May, and he's struggled to a 6.75 ERA in six appearances. He couldn't improve upon his stats Saturday, getting lifted after two-thirds of an inning due to the ailment. The 27-year-old should be considered day-to-day.

There was a lot of traffic during McKenzie's third Cactus League start, but Monday's mixed-result effort was much better than his previous outing. The right-hander walked five and retired just two of seven batters during his second spring start 12 days ago. The seven hits suggest command was inconsistent, but McKenzie amassed 13 whiffs among his 60 offerings, indicating he can be effective when locating. The improvement from his second spring outing keeps him alive in the battle for a spot in the rotation. He was among the five starters in the projected Opening Day roster compiled by Mandy Bell and Tim Stebbins of MLB.com.

Through the first three months of the 2024 season, the historically injury prone McKenzie has enjoyed a clean bill of health, but he's performed well below expectations for both the Guardians and fantasy managers alike. After failing to escape the third inning while giving up five earned runs in his most recent start Friday in Kansas City, McKenzie now holds a 5.11 ERA and 1.56 WHIP over 75.2 innings on the season. The Guardians will send the right-hander to the minors with the hope that he'll be able to return to form and eventually slot back into the big-league rotation. Gavin Williams (elbow) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list and will fill McKenzie's spot in the rotation during the upcoming week.
