Rockies' Brett Sullivan: Pops another homer in loss
Sullivan went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a second RBI in Saturday's 7-5 loss to the Athletics.
Sullivan has hit four homers this season, all coming since May 26. Over his last nine games, he has gone 8-for-21 (.381) despite filling a backup role. While his bat has improved lately, Sullivan is no real threat to Hunter Goodman's status as the Rockies' starting catcher. On the year, Sullivan is batting .229 with a .679 OPS, 13 RBI, seven runs scored, six doubles and no stolen bases over 104 plate appearances.

Rockies' Brett Sullivan: Swats two homers in loss
Sullivan went 3-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs in a loss to the Cubs on Thursday.
Sullivan got the start behind the plate and batted out of the No. 9 slot in the order. He hit two of Colorado's three long balls (all solo shots) to post the first multi-homer game of his career. In fact, coming into Thursday, Sullivan had gone deep just three times across 206 career MLB plate appearances. Sullivan's performance against the Cubs was also his first multi-hit effort since April 29, and with one of baseball's most productive hitting catchers (Hunter Goodman) ahead of him on the depth chart, Sullivan doesn't figure to see extensive playing time moving forward.

Rockies' Brett Sullivan: Goes yard in blowout loss
Sullivan went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 15-6 loss to the Dodgers.
With the game turning into a blowout early, Sullivan was brought in to give Hunter Goodman some rest. Sullivan then pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing one hit and no walks, before tacking on a run for the Rockies with his solo shot off position player Miguel Rojas in the ninth. This was Sullivan's first homer since the 2024 campaign with the Padres, and he's added nine RBI, four runs scored, six doubles and no stolen bases while batting .195 with a .553 OPS over 84 plate appearances this year.

Rockies' Brett Sullivan: Back on bench
Sullivan is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies.
Sullivan will hit the bench for the series finale after he went 0-for-10 with six strikeouts over the past three games while making two starts at catcher and one at designated hitter. Despite the recent uptick in playing time, Sullivan is unlikely to move into a full-time role so long as top backstop Hunter Goodman is healthy.

Rockies' Brett Sullivan: Sparks Colorado's offense Wednesday
Sullivan went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, three RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 13-2 win over the Reds.
Sullivan jumpstarted Colorado's big offensive day with a bases-clearing double in the first inning, then added another double in the seventh as part of a three-hit performance. The catcher has shown surprising extra-base ability early this season, already collecting six extra-base hits in just 47 plate appearances after tallying only five across his first 142 MLB plate appearances. Sullivan is now slashing an impressive .289/.319/.422 with six doubles, seven RBI and two runs scored.

Rockies' Brett Sullivan: Knocks in two
Sullivan went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI on Sunday against the Padres.
Sullivan has started three straight games with Hunter Goodman (finger) unable to handle defensive work behind the plate. Sullivan managed a double for the second consecutive contest, also knocking in Colorado's only two runs on the day. He has only 135 career plate appearances in the majors, but Sullivan has hit just .216 with two home runs.

Rockies' Brett Sullivan: Drawing third straight start
Sullivan will start at catcher and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Padres.
Though top backstop Hunter Goodman will remain in the lineup at designated hitter Sunday, he has yet to resume catching since suffering a right middle finger laceration in Thursday's 7-3 loss. Sullivan will pick up his third consecutive start as a result, but since the Rockies haven't been compelled to call up another catcher from the minors, Goodman will presumably return to action behind the plate in the near future. Sullivan's playing time will almost certainly tail off considerably at that point.

The Rockies are expected to formally select Sullivan's contract Friday, when the team sets its final roster ahead of the season opener in Miami. Sullivan split time between the Padres and Pirates organizations in 2025, seeing action in only three games in the majors while slashing .207/.264/.325 with four home runs and six stolen bases across 295 plate appearances at the Triple-A level. He's expected to play sparingly behind top backstop Hunter Goodman.

A career .204/.250/.291 hitter over parts of three big-league seasons, Sullivan will turn 32 in February and is likely to begin the season at Triple-A Albuquerque.

Pirates' Brett Sullivan: Removed from 40-man roster
The Pirates designated Sullivan for assignment Monday.
The club needed to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Dauri Moreta (elbow), who was activated from the 60-day injured list. Booting Sullivan from the active roster suggests the Pirates are preparing for Joey Bart (concussion) to be activated prior to Tuesday's game in Detroit.

The Pirates acquired Sullivan from the Padres on Wednesday in exchange for Bryce Johnson and cash considerations, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

The Padres designated Sullivan for assignment Saturday.
Sullivan was behind Elias Diaz, Martin Maldonado and Luis Campusano in the pecking order at catcher and wasn't deemed worthy of a 40-man roster spot. Sullivan has accrued 103 plate appearances across the last two seasons in the majors and could continue to serve as organizational depth for the club if he clears waivers.

Padres' Brett Sullivan: Optioned to Triple-A
The Padres optioned Sullivan to Triple-A El Paso on Friday.
Sullivan is the odd man out for San Diego following the return of Xander Bogaerts (shoulder), who was reinstated from the IL on Friday. Sullivan was rarely able to see the field while behind Luis Campusano and Kyle Higashioka on the depth chart at catcher, appearing in just four games since being recalled from the minors June 22. He'll return to being organizational depth at Triple-A.
